Background: Kakuma Refugee Camp is situated in Turkana County in the North Western part of Kenya. The camp provides support services to a population of over 184,000 persons.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has been operating in the camp since 1992 and from January 1997, it took over the management of the entire health sector including the Clinical Services Program.

 

The Clinical Services Program currently offers primary health care services at our main hospital and five autonomous out-patient clinics. 

PHC in the Kenya context refers to services provided to beneficiaries at health posts (or clinics) in the camps and the camp hospitals and which is provided free of charge. 

These services include diagnosis and treatment of common diseases, nutritional support and management of malnutrition, basic mental health services. 

Other services offered include; immunization; health promotion; and disease surveillance and response.

Currently the Clinical Service Program does not have a cardiologist specialist on ground to review heart disease patients. 

Patients are identified by qualified clinicians in the hospital and community health officers in the community and satellites clinics with major cases being chronic. 

Such patients do not usually get the services they require due to lack of specialized providers.

Objective: The main aim of this consultancy is to confirm the diagnosis for each patient and give the necessary management. 

In case treatment cannot be given within the camp facilities, further action can be recommended.

Duration of the Consultancy: The proposed consultancy would take place on 24th – 26th August 2015

Conditions of Work

The consultants will be based at IRC Main Hospital – Kakuma Refugee Camp.  

Transport to and from the IRC Hospital and Kakuma Mission Hospital will be provided as required.

The consultant will be required to abide by the IRC security procedures and rules in place for the IRC staff. 

A security briefing will be provided to the consultant upon arrival in Kakuma by the field Safety and Security officer.

Deliverables 

• Review of pre-screened cardiac and newly diagnosed patients.


• Provide recommendations on management of cardiac conditions that cannot be managed within Kakuma


• Facilitate a CME for clinical staff (medical doctors, clinical officers and nurses) on a relevant health topic

The consultant will be paid a negotiated amount after the consultancy. 

The consultant will be provided with meals and accommodation within IRC compound

IRC will arrange for the consultant’s movement from his/her destination as appropriate to and from Kakuma by air.
 

Qualifications / Requirements

• MMmed Internal Medicine


• Bachelor of medicine and surgery.


• Two years post-qualification experience
