Unemployed? Why Going Back To School Is Not The Solution

By Sera Kazungu

Job seeking is understandably a very tasking experience. Most times, job seekers find it hard to keep trying when they have already been at it for months or even years! In most cases, some will prefer to start up their own projects here and there while others will usually prefer going back to school.

The reasons for going back to school will mostly include some or most of the following; changing careers, Adding more skills, job search frustration and many more.

“Most Employers are not really looking at what papers you have. They just want to know what you can do and what skills you have,”says Perminus Wainaina, a Recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing Services.

Going back to school is not always a solution to joblessness. Below is a list of reasons why.

Reasons Not To Go Back To School

1.You are not guaranteed a job
Going back to school does not automatically mean that you become more marketable and thus give you a job. It has been a common assumption among Kenyans that going back to school gives you an edge that most job seekers do not have.

The only thing that will give you an edge in today’s Kenyan job market is a wealth of skills, good recommendations and a believable, traceable track record.

2. You do not add any value to your CV
You were advised that having that degree or MBA or even a higher diploma would boost your CV and make employers give it a second glance. This could be true, but not in all cases.

The only thing that really matters is what contributions employers think you can bring to their companies. Skills and achievements, give weight to a CV.

3. You want to do a more “marketable” course
Are you that person who finished school, started job searching and still haven’t gotten a job? Are you thinking of going back to school to pursue a different course? The truth is that you could still do a different course and still end up not finding a job.

You should consider building up on your education by earning some work related skills. This can be acquired from internships or even volunteering.

Education is always a good thing. It adds value to our lives and gives us accolades that we mark our achievements. However, you should only go back to school when your reasons are the right ones. Do not let desperation and false hope push you.
