Responsibilities

The Nautical surveyor will be reporting to the Chief Surveyor and Receiver of wreck and shall have the following tasks and responsibilities:

Implementation of port state control and Flag state implementation duties.Assist as required in pollution prevention and control.Cooperate and liaise with other agencies dealing with Flag state implementation and port sate Control functions as directed by the chief surveyor and receiver of wreck.Participate in marine search and rescue where and when necessary.Carry out casualty investigation as directed by the chief surveyor of wreck.Participate fully and give professional and technical advice to any committee appointed by the Government to determine Kenya’s needs for domestication of International treaties, conventions or agreements.Highest sea-going certificate in nautical field, that is, a Certificate of Competency with neither area limitation nor tonnage limitation. The certificate should have been issued in accordance with regulation II/2 of STCW 78 as amended.A Masters degree in Maritime affairs (Maritime/Safety Administration) or Maritime Education and Training or Naval Architecture will be added advantageMust be computer literate.At least 1 (one) year experience as Master or 2 (two) years at Chief) Officer level after qualifying.2. Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities at this level will include:

Inspection of ships and Floating crafts to ensure maintenance of the highest shipping standards in Kenya.Prevention of all types of marine pollution; ensuring safety of navigation in Kenya.Enforcing ship construction regulations and standards.Conducting investigations into maritime casualties and overseeing training and recruitment of seafarers.In addition, the officer will be responsible for;
Drawing training programs for seafarers in accordance with the STCW 78 (as amended)Assessment of qualifying sea service for examinations of competence.Preparation of practical or written examinations for seafarersAnd liaising with Maritime Training Institute, Kenya Institute of Education, Kenya technical training College, Kenya National Examination Council and other relevant institute in curriculum development and research for Kenya seafarers.Qualifications.

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have;

At least Class 1 certificate of competency.For Marine engineers the certificate should have been issued in accordance with regulation III/2 of STCW 1978 as amendedFor deck officers the certificate should have been issued in accordance with regulation II/2 of STCW 1978 as amended.A Masters degree in Maritime Affairs (Maritime Safety Administration) or Maritime Education and Training or Naval Architecture will be an added advantage; andMust be computer literate.Completed 1 (one) year as chief Engineer or two (2) years as 2nd Engineer, or at least (1) year as a master or two (2) years at chief officer level after qualifying.At least 1 (one) year experience in marine surveys as well as knowledge of International Maritime Organization and maritime conventions.Applicants who meet the specified requirements should send detailed Curriculum vitae along with copies of academic and professional certificates and testimonials together with day-time telephone contact names of three referees to:
