Handicap International (HI) is an INGO specialising in the field of disability and development. A strong emphasis is placed on empowering people with disabilities through their integration into mainstream development activities and the provision of appropriate health and rehabilitation services to ensure equal opportunities for all.
From the 1st of November, HI has launched the Ubuntu care project with the ultimate goal to end violence against children through social cohesion. This multi- countries project (Burundi, Rwanda,
Kenya) aims to address the root causes and to mitigate the consequences of violence against children, especially those with disabilities. The strategy is to translate effectively the international commitments in regard of children’s rights, in particular the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) into practical actions on the ground through improved response mechanisms to Sexual and gender based violence against children at all levels. This project will engage with children and empower them as key stakeholders in their own protection, through a Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) approach.
