Does the company live up to its words?
Career Point Kenya recently caught up with a past intern who was willing to share her working experience on the condition of anonymity.
How did you get the rare internship opportunitty at KenGen?
The opportunity was through a cousin who was working with the company at the time.
Did they conduct an interview and what kind of questions were you asked?
Yes they did. The questions were mainly based on the various IT fields such as networking, IT support, system development and troubleshooting.
Was there any remuneration for the IT internship?
There was no salary since I was an intern and according to government policies, interns are not paid in parastatals.
How would you describe your working experience at KenGen?
The experience offered a challenge and growth with enriching knowledge in my area of expertise (Bachelor of Science in Information Technology); I was trained in so many things in the IT field such as solving various hardware issues and maintaining applications programs.
What don’t people know about KenGen?
That their working environment is positive to those hoping to gain real life experience. They also do not have limited resources in terms of working materials and they offer frequent trainings in ones area of expertise.
What did you like about KenGen as an Intern?
It was their cordial working environment and the fact that the IT department had a very friendly team.
And what didn’t you like?
The issue with gaining access to various points in the building, you are required to have access cards and KenGen did not issue any cards to interns.
What’s your advice to young job seekers hoping to intern or get employed with KenGen?
My advice is for them to pursue internships and employment at KenGen, because from firsthand knowledge, the esteemed company gives individuals ample time to gain experience.
If you are lucky enough to get a job, employees are entitled to several benefits, such as medical covers, international trainings and allowances.
What’s your advice to the top management at KenGen?
I would advice them to have more job openings for young job seekers.
