A “Real” Recruitment Agency is asking for a Fee…Should I Pay?

Job seeker is worried if she should attend an interview

By Elizabeth Benu

Having applied for many jobs, many job seekers wish that they would at least be called for an interview. Janet Kalondu* is confused because even after a frustrating job search, she is not sure she should attend the interview.

This is her story:

Ever since I graduated in 2013 with a degree in Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting Option) I have been looking for a permanent job with a good pay. It has not been a bad journey, but I have also come across jobs that are temporary and pay peanuts and sometimes stayed jobless for more than 6 months.

I recently applied for an Accountant Job through a Recruting Agency. It was just one of the application you make for the sake of it. I was later contacted via email by the agency. However, my instincts tell me not to go for this interview.

Should I go to this interview?

From the email, I am expected to part with 50% of my salary when I get the job, pay a Kshs. 4, 000 interview facilitation fee and travel 150 kilometers per day to get to the interview venue. Considering I live far away, I do not want to work in a place where I will be fighting with traffic for long hours and consuming the better part of my day stuck in traffic.

As if that is not enough, they have also asked me to carry a letter from the chief ascertaining that I am a law-abiding citizen who pays her taxes. (I mean, who even does that?!)

I have already googled the company and the reviews are both positive and negative. Following my many months of unsuccessful job searching, this is the first interview I have gotten. The job, as they said, is earning Kshs. 65, 000 per month. Coming from a Kshs. 25, 000 salary, this is a good offer.

Should I take the risk, pay the money and attend the interview or should I just save my Kshs. 4,000 and keep looking for a job?

Please Help.

What advice would you give Janet?
