Our client is a fast-growing renewable energy company based in Nairobi. Founded in 2011, they have tripled sales every year since inception while investing heavily in exploring innovative business models which could be built from their platform. The company has restructured in 2015 into two distinct business segments dealing with Solar and Grid. Solar is tasked with building its cash contract and single off-taker business, while Grid is responsible for developing its micro-utility business.
At its core is a workshop and projects team that handles all inventory, procurement, fabrication, installation, maintenance, and project management to support work across both segments. Our client would like to fill the position of a Workshop Manager to oversee all of the operations that take place in the workshop.
Workshop Manager Job Description and Responsibilities
As the Workshop Manager, you are responsible for overseeing all of the operations that take place in the workshop. It is your job to ensure the execution of projects in coordination with the business and installations teams. You are at the core of the company’s operations, in a senior management role, and your ability to play your role well is critical to the success of the company.
More specifically your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Executing project work, including procurement, system design, fabrication, and quality control. Strategic planning to ensure the completion of projects on time and to the highest degree of quality.
Managing operational human resources, including: assessing personnel needs, participating in the hiring process, management and career development of workshop personnel, and overseeing HR systems in the workshop.
Developing and overseeing workshop systems including inventory, customer fulfillment, job cards, and expense reporting.
Delegation and supervision of workshop personnel’s tasks to execute project work.
Ensuring excellent communication between the workshop/field based activities and those of the head business office.
Communicating with the accounts team to ensure coordination on inventory and expenses, and proper tracking of job costs
Maintaining and managing company vehicles
Skills and Qualifications for the Workshop Manager Vacancy
Minimum degree in engineering from a reputable organization
10+ years experience in operations (Kenya highly preferred)
3+ years in a senior management position overseeing a warehouse, workshop, or other facility in Kenya. Backgrounds in renewable energy, utilities, telecoms, transportation, metal fabrication, and engineering are a big plus.
Proven ability to manage complex systems, drive improvements, and meet KPIs in an operational context.
Computer skills: adept at using email, Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to pick up new software skills quickly and with minimal training.

Courtesy and respectfulness to all colleagues, partners, and clients.
Strong and consistent communication with colleagues and managers, both orally and through emails.
Enthusiasm for the field of renewable energy.
Willingness and ability to self-identify ways to improve the company.
