We're seeking an experienced, technical, and people-focused App Developer Manager to lead our team of app developers in East Africa, within the App Services team.
The team is currently focused on:
– Being the technology partner for the Kenya and Uganda ministries of health and supporting them digitise their community health tools and scale up nationally
– Several additional smaller-scale projects and pilots.
All the mobile apps are built using the Community Health Toolkit, a collection of open-source technologies and open-access resources. This is a unique opportunity to strengthen health systems in some of the hardest to reach communities.
As an experienced developer manager your primary role will be to lead our incredible team of developers in producing high quality digital health tools while being an advocate of their professional development and well being. You will report to the Head of App Services.
Key Responsibilities
- Building a world-class software development team and culture.
- Manage a team of software developers to produce high-quality digital tools that make a difference.
- Guide the growth of the team through technical mentorship, performance management, and development opportunities.
- Set technical direction and directly contribute to solve the team's hardest technical challenges.
- Support the growth of our open-source community by contributing learnings, expertise, and code.
- Travel to the field (Kenya, Uganda) to test apps in their realistic operating environment.
- Support in proposal writing, publications, present Medic Mobile in meetings, seminars, summits & forums when called upon to do so.
You;
- Have a history of building highly effective teams of software developers.
Have 5+ years of experience managing a group of software developers. Experience managing a remote team is an asset. - Have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or equivalent.
- Are proficient in both written and spoken English. Knowledge of French would be an asset.
- Are proficient in Javascript or other programming languages.
- Are proficient in relational databases (Postgres)
- Are capable and experienced mentor of junior to intermediate developers.
- Can manage and prioritise a distributed team of developers to deliver on multiple concurrent projects.
- Experience delivering and monitoring software services.
- Familiarity with the Community Health Toolkit is an asset.
- Good logical diagnostic skills and ability to exercise good judgment in the resolution of problems.
- Passion for digital health systems
- Candidates must have valid authorization to work in the region without requiring sponsorship.
