Real Impact is an NGO working with network partners in East Africa to alleviate malnutrition and poverty through the integration of sound agronomic programmes in Nutrition Gardens linked to balanced menus in institutional and domestic kitchens.

The position holder will further develop and implement the Real Impact Applied Nutrition curriculum and training materials and liaise with the Agronomy Team to optimise the nutritional outputs and utilisation of Nutrition Garden vegetables and bought-in dry goods.

The post requires an out-going personality, capable of motivating teams and providing a strong role model in terms of personal commitment to sound nutrition through their own diet and life-style. Confidence and experience in delivery of stimulating training sessions is essential.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate practical cooking skills and ability to design nutritionally balanced menus at both the institutional mass catering level and for domestic households.

The candidate must also have extensive networking abilities with relevant stakeholders within the Ministries, donor and NGO networks and be familiar with current regional nutritional statistics and research issues, particularly concerning HIV, child and pregnant/lactating mothers.

Report writing skills are essential and pdf copies of recent reports for which the candidate is the main author should be sent with the application.

The candidate must be computer literate (power point, word, excel) and hold a current driving license and work permit if non-Kenyan.

Qualifications:

    Degree in Applied Nutrition or Home Economics minimum 2nd upper honours
Commercial experience in large scale catering e.g. canteen, hospital, restaurant – provide references
Minimum 5 years experience working with a relevant donor funded project e.g. USAID APHIA, FTC, WFP, UNICEF – please provide 2 references from donor project managers.
Fluency in English and Kiswahili

With only 8 percent of the land capable of being cultivated for crops and 75 percent of the Kenyan workforce engaged in agriculture, Kenyan farmers face growing problems of soil erosion, deforestation, water pollution, and desertification. While global warming may be responsible for Kenya's severe droughts, current farming practices are also leading to the growth of environmental problems. Weaning farmers off of unsustainable methods is a difficult task in any circumstance, much less during times of economic desperation. Farming and daily life are also complicated by sharing the land with abundant wildlife. Wildlife is integral to the ecosystem, let alone Kenya's well-known tourism industry. Securing the conservation of native flora and fauna is critical to the region's future on a number of levels.
To help address these issues, FSD’s programs promote Sustainable agriculture, educate the public on environmental issues, construct eco- friendly water and waste management systems and implement environmental conservation.

As an FSD Intern in Mombasa, Kenya, you will work side-by-side with a Community-Based Organization specializing in one more of the following development sectors: health, youth and education, women’s empowerment, microfinance, human rights, community development and/or environmental issues.
