Position Summary
Futures Group is seeking a Communications Advisor who will provide technical assistance and support across the project activities related to policy, finance, governance and capacity development of the Government of Kenya (GoK) national-level health sector agencies to support implementation of the new constitution. The Communications Advisor will coordinate and support the planning, development, and implemenation of a project communication strategy, including preparing policy briefs, project reports, and success stories. Responsibilities require knowledge of health policy issues in Kenya and in East Africa.
The Communications Advisor will report to the Program Director of the Health Policy Project’s Kenya field program. Location for this position is Nairobi, Kenya. No expatriate benefits are associated with this position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Guides the design of a project communication strategy. Manage the planning, production, publication and dissemination of necessary project communication materials, including reports, presentations and white papers. Organizes and supports communications and materials for project trainings, conferences, workshops, and meetings. Supervises short-term local consultants in Kenya assigned to communication activities Supervises the design, printing and dissemination of briefs and policy communication materials in English and Swahili to audiences at the national and sub-national levels Coordinate the project’s participation in national, regional, and international conferences by helping to plan abstracts, prepare and finalize materials Participates, and represents the organization as needed, in outside associations, conferences, and symposia. Provides guidance on communications and knowledge management to all project staff members. Actively participates in the development of annual work planning, design, implementation, and reporting related to project technical activities. Participates in the preparation of bids and proposals in response to government, foundation or other donor solicitation as requested by the company or supervisor Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assignedSkills and Experience Required
Effective written and oral communication skills, with emphasis on succinct writing and strategic communication. Ability to copyedit and provide basic document formatting/layout Understanding of and experience with current dissemination platforms, social media posting and tracking, and modern communications and advocacy methodologies. Understanding of and experience with strategies to document success stories and report project activities, outcomes, and results. Demonstrated strength and experience providing technical assistance, writing technical reports, and policy briefs targeted to decision makers, particularly high-level policy audiences. Experience working with mass media, including the ability to plan, coordinate and submit news articles Ability to conduct trainings and build capacity on communication planning and implementation. Ability to understand and communicate research findings to non-technical audiences. Professional and diplomatic demeanor and conduct, especially during interactions with funders and stakeholders. Attention to detail and ability to effectively and efficiently perform multiple tasks and balance competing priorities often within a required timeframe. Ability to travel within Kenya. Proficient in the use of desktop software, esp. Microsoft Office.Minimum Education or Experience
Advanced degree in a relevant discipline. 5+ years of experience in managing information and communication activities in a public health program. Fluent written and spoken English and Swahili is required. Strong interpersonal, writing, presentation, and organizational skills are required.
