Investment Advisor - Entrepreneurship Development Programme in Africa

Objective of the Programme:

DAI is preparing for an anticipated DFID programme to strengthen entrepreneurship in Africa, titled StartUP!, through regional hubs in Kenya, Ghana and South Africa. The programme will improve support for early stage companies by creating local environments in which entrepreneurs can access financial capital, skills and professional networks required to grow and scale business ideas. The programme work with in-country intermediaries, such as incubators and investment funds, generating financial and non-financial support and encouraging investment into early stage companies.

Scope of Work:

We are seeking applications from experienced investment experts for Investment Advisor positions in Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa. The role will consist of working with investors and intermediaries delivering business services. On the investment side, work will entail, amongst other responsibilities, support with opportunity identification and due diligence, advising on investment facility/product structuring, equity and debt transactions, supporting the development of angel and venture capital investor networks, and generating awareness about opportunities with early stage companies. With intermediaries, the work will include assisting businesses with becoming investment ready, through business plan development, product advice, investor linkages, and deal facilitation.

Requirements:

Approximately 10 years working in investment advisory/management, with a demonstrable track record in investment preparation/investment mobilisation.Expert knowledge of investment fund structures, and equity and debt investment instruments.Experience in conducting due diligence on investment opportunities, ability to advise/broker transactions, and build capacity of enterprises to receive investment, is highly desirable.Strong knowledge of the investment market in Kenya, South Africa, or Ghana.Strong qualitative and quantitative skills.Previous experience with donor funded economic growth/financial services projects in Africa is desirable.Knowledge of product prototyping and testing would be advantageous.Proven leadership, management, and communication experience.Excellent English required.Excellent communication, presentation, networking and facilitation skills.Understanding of key approaches to monitoring & evaluation

The Role

Role overview

As the Africa Region Policy and Advocacy Advisor, one of the main focuses of this role initially will be to coordinate the advocacy work of VSO and partner organisations on the Post-2015 Development Framework – the global development framework that is set to replace the Millennium Development Goals when they expire in 2015. As VSO Africa Policy and Advocacy Adivsor, you will play a key role in influencing government and international action seeking trans formative change for some of the world’s most disadvantaged people.
Liaising with our partners, volunteers and staff, delivering policy briefings, influencing international moments through engagement with country and regional decision makers and working with coalition partners are all critical to success in this role. We need someone with a keen analytic mind, a talent for writing persuasively and with an aptitude for developing influential relationships with civil servants and policy targets. Experience of the Post-2015 development agenda or advocacy on other regional and global policy change movements is desirable.
The major focus for this role during 2014-15 will be delivering the policy work relating to VSO Post-2015 advocacy work. Key ‘deliverables’ early on in the job will include connecting VSO in to the important national and regional discussions and consultations happening on the Post-2015 development agenda and contributing to the global direction of our Post-2015 advocacy work at key international moments. Position Summary

Futures Group is seeking a Communications Advisor who will provide technical assistance and support across the project activities related to policy, finance, governance and capacity development of the Government of Kenya (GoK) national-level health sector agencies to support implementation of the new constitution. The Communications Advisor will coordinate and support the planning, development, and implemenation of a project communication strategy, including preparing policy briefs, project reports, and success stories. Responsibilities require knowledge of health policy issues in Kenya and in East Africa.

The Communications Advisor will report to the Program Director of the Health Policy Project’s Kenya field program. Location for this position is Nairobi, Kenya. No expatriate benefits are associated with this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Guides the design of a project communication strategy. Manage the planning, production, publication and dissemination of necessary project communication materials, including reports, presentations and white papers. Organizes and supports communications and materials for project trainings, conferences, workshops, and meetings. Supervises short-term local consultants in Kenya assigned to communication activities Supervises the design, printing and dissemination of briefs and policy communication materials in English and Swahili to audiences at the national and sub-national levels Coordinate the project’s participation in national, regional, and international conferences by helping to plan abstracts, prepare and finalize materials Participates, and represents the organization as needed, in outside associations, conferences, and symposia. Provides guidance on communications and knowledge management to all project staff members. Actively participates in the development of annual work planning, design, implementation, and reporting related to project technical activities. Skills and Experience Required

Effective written and oral communication skills, with emphasis on succinct writing and strategic communication. Ability to copyedit and provide basic document formatting/layout Understanding of and experience with current dissemination platforms, social media posting and tracking, and modern communications and advocacy methodologies. Understanding of and experience with strategies to document success stories and report project activities, outcomes, and results. Demonstrated strength and experience providing technical assistance, writing technical reports, and policy briefs targeted to decision makers, particularly high-level policy audiences. Experience working with mass media, including the ability to plan, coordinate and submit news articles Ability to conduct trainings and build capacity on communication planning and implementation. Ability to understand and communicate research findings to non-technical audiences. Professional and diplomatic demeanor and conduct, especially during interactions with funders and stakeholders. Attention to detail and ability to effectively and efficiently perform multiple tasks and balance competing priorities often within a required timeframe. Ability to travel within Kenya. Proficient in the use of desktop software, esp. Microsoft Office.

Minimum Education or Experience

Advanced degree in a relevant discipline. 5+ years of experience in managing information and communication activities in a public health program. Fluent written and spoken English and Swahili is required. Strong interpersonal, writing, presentation, and organizational skills are required. The position requires building the capacity of civil society organizations and their staff, through mentoring, coaching, training and grant-making. Strong candidates will possess strong communication, interpersonal skills especially with members of civil society and local government.
