By Florence Mukunya,
For Hillary who has been looking for a job for 6 months after graduating, he was fortunate enough to get an Insurance position in a hospital and quickly took it without hesitation. With the current state of unemployment in the country, he is lucky enough to get a job that aligns with his educational qualifications.
It’s been 3 months on the job and the CPA Holder is beginning to notice a major problem. He feels bored and does not enjoy his work as much as he thought he would be. Not because his work is boring but because there is not much to do and he feels he is in the wrong job.
Sometimes he goes for 2 weeks without a single assignment and he is now thinking of looking for another job.
So should Hillary trust his instincts that the job is not meant for him? When is the best time to decide you want a new job?
As any working professional, there comes a time where you feel the urge to start looking for a new opportunity elsewhere.
No matter your reason, it is necessary to plan ahead because the main challenge is that people like Hillary lack a proper plan.
Through proper planning and organizing systematic ways of job searching, you can make the transition from one job to another.
So on what instances can you start to consider searching for a new job?
Your Employer is not adhering to the job terms
If your current employer is not adhering to the terms and conditions indicated on the job contract, then it is high time you start looking for a new one.
However, I would caution against looking for a job too soon since with such a short time as chances are that you did not learn anything.
In the case of Hillary, it is hard to convince his new employer to hire him because he will not be taken seriously.
A good time to look for a new job is when you feel you have accomplished your goals and wants to explore your opportunities elsewhere.
You are not adding value to the company
There comes a time when you feel you are not reaching your full potential just like Hillary, and a wise decision would be to seek an opportunity where you can fully develop your career.
There is no specific time to finding a new job
There is no exact time frame when it comes to looking for a job so as you picture yourself in your dream job, ensure that you start looking for it as early as possible.
While you are still working, consider available opportunities as open as they come and even go an extra length to attend job interviews if invited.
This way, you will fully understand what is needed on a particular field as well be aware of the current trends and skills that are in demand.
The key concern should be about concentrating on your career growth and the desire to prove oneself.
If you are in the same situation as Hillary, prioritize these factors and evaluate all your options and once convinced, make the decision!
