How to be competitive in the Kenyan job market as an accountant

By Jane Okoth

Accounting is no doubt one of the most sought after profession in the Kenyan job market. Business related courses account for a good percentage in employment opportunities which explain why many are pursuing the profession.

In a very diverse job market, how do you ensure that you stand out in the market considering a big number of individuals are exploring the career?

How to be competitive in the job market as an accountant

1. All accountants have to be all rounded
It will be hard to secure a job as an accountant if you are not well rounded, says Karani Giture, Director of Administration and also a lecturer at Summit institute of Professionals.

For instance having additional knowledge in QuickBooks coupled with your CPA will make you more competitive in the job market. This is because the knowledge will help you gain the practical technical knowledge of how to use the software.

Also, employers want people who are technology savvy to bring and execute better solutions and strategies. Combining your accounting background with IT will ensure that you have a bright future in this ever changing profession.

Accounting is continually evolving and in response to the ever-shifting field, financial and technology skills remains to be very essential.

2. Accountants need to gain hands on experience as early as possible so as to be competitive

“Some of the accounting graduates I know wait for the last minute to start exploring opportunities. They don’t take advantage of opportunities right at their disposal,” says Mr Giture.

This is very bad timing because you need to start gaining the experience even if you are still studying.

An employer wants to hire someone with experience to solve a problem and if you are not able to execute that, you won’t be needed.Look for opportunities that are available and explore them so as to have an edge in your career.

Considering how dynamic the requirements of this expanding profession are, it is a career necessity for an accountant to have both technical and soft skills. All accountants must always have the ability and willingness to learn.
