Application Tips for Contract Jobs in Kenya
By Elizabeth Benu
“I love contract jobs because they give me the freedom to plan for the future. The disadvantage is that they are short and I always have a hard time landing one. What is the best way to apply for such jobs?” writes Caroline Mueni in an email.
Contract jobs are short and in most times instances, there is no permanent employment after completion.
However, they need to be treated like any other job.
How do you make an application for contract jobs?
1. Read the job description and write a cover letter and CV that is specific
It may seem cliché but many applicants send a generic cover letter and CV for contract jobs. The best cover letter for any contract job should tell why you are the best candidate based on your qualifications to make sure you fit the job.
The CV on the other hand, should highlight all your experiences and achievements relevant to the position you are applying for.
2. Know why you want to work for that company
You probably want to work for Total Kenya because they are a prestigious company and the experience on your CV will do you good. But when it comes to employers, they do not care whether you want to get out of your current jobless situation or gain experience. What matters is for you to prove that you would stick with an employer even when a better temporary opportunity comes up.
That way it will be easier to land a job.
3.Emphasize on the point “I want to work for you”
“The company you are going to work for needs someone who wants to be part of the team and is passionate about what the company stands for,” says Florence Mukunya, a professional CV writer at Corporate Staffing Services.
She further adds that after doing your research about the company, show that you will fit in and get along with others.
Confidence is essential in application of contract jobs
4.Be confident about yourself and your abilities
As most HR Professionals confirm, no single candidate matches every qualification on the job description. For example if you have experience receiving visitors at the reception but no experience in operating the switch board as an Administrative Assistant, let them know your strengths. Do not focus on the qualifications that you do not have.
If you have a weakness, it is always advisable to come to the interview with suggestions on how you could overcome it. This attitude wows the HR manager and makes you appear as someone who is not afraid to push themselves out of a comfort zone.
The most important thing to remember is to be confident. If you can handle the job responsibilities, apply for it as long as you are a fast learner and hard worker.
