Job Application Tips: Should I Use an Email or Hard Copies?

Should I use an email or hard copies to make job applications

By Tabitha Makumi,

It happens, sometimes you are torn between sending an email or doing it the old fashioned way of dropping CVs from one company in let’s say Upper Hill, Nairobi to another in Industrial Area. Which between the two do most Kenyan recruiters prefer?

“I have been dropping my CV’s with all the leading recruitment agencies in Kenya and SME’s because I believe there is a high chance most recruiters will remember me this way than just sending an email. However, I haven’t been successful enough to land an opportunity. Due to lack of results, should I resort to sending emails?” writes Jemima Koech* in an email to Career Point Kenya.

Answer To should I use an email or hard copies?

Speaking to Justus Ng’etich, a Recruitment Account Manager at Corporate Staffing Services he strongly suggests on the need to keep up with the digital era.

“Chances are high that most recruiters will do away with your CV the moment you hit the door unless there’s an open position and your CV is impressive enough not to hit the trash can.”

He further explains that with an email there’s a high probability of being considered for an opening even if it’s not available at the time.

“Take a look at all the big companies such as the UN. To this day they still ask candidates to use their job portal to make online applications. Every notable company in Kenya always provides and email for applications and there are some who go the extra length of saying hard copies would not be entertained.”

But do hard copies every work in this day and age? He is skeptical but says, “Once in a while they do. But here is the thing, even when I or any other recruiter takes your CV, they will still insist on you sending a soft copy since they can’t forward your hard copies to the client.”

Bottom line is, whatever method floats your boat, it only pays off if it’s yielding positive jobs search results.
