Head of Credit and Risk Job in Kenya




Job Title: Head of Credit and Risk
 



1. Main Purpose of Job: Responsible for the overall Risk and Credit management and strategic direction of the business, which include all risk related policies, procedures, assessment portfolio and asset risk management and collections. 



This person will also have the relationship with legal counsel whenever legal matters arise.




2. Structure and KPA’s
 


 


Reporting Line


  • To: CEO

  • Direct Reports: Credit Manager, Collections Manager, Asset Manager, Portfolio Risk Manager


Relationships


  • Internal (Employer): Operations, Risk, Sales, Finance

  • External: (Dealership/ Distributor/ Market) Customers, Executive and Snr Management of Distributors/Dealers/ Manufacturers. Legal Council, Service providers, Credit Agencies, Banks and other funding partners


Key Performance Areas


  • Bad Debt/ Write offs: To ensure budget and targets are achieved

  • Arrears/ Defaults: To ensure budget and targets are achieved

  • Asset Risks/ Residual Values: To ensure budget and targets are achieved

  • Portfolio Risks: To ensure budget and targets are achieved

  • Risk Matrix: Effective management of Risk Matrix


3. Main Job Functions
 



3.1 Credit Risk


  • Build strong relationships with Executive and Snr level management teams across functions

  • Develop and Implement the Credit Policy, Processes and Procedures

  • Ensure that the Credit assessment targets and SLA’s are achieved


3.2 Administration and Reporting:


  • To report on a weekly and monthly basis on the overall Risk and Credit performance of the business

  • Ensure that the annual Performance Management Program for direct and indirect reports are completed

  • Ensure that the forecast and budgets for the Credit and Risk function, presented and implemented

  • Present a Monthly Report pack on the overall performance of the function

  • Managing the budgets of the Credit and Risk function


3.3 Management:


  • Managing the Senior Management team for the Credit and Risk function

  • Managing external vendors (Credit Agencies, Legal, Dealers, Collection Agents)


3.4 Customers:


  • Building strong relationships with the Top 20 customers for the business

  • Building strong relationships with the Corporate and SME market on an Executive and Snr Management level


3.5 Strategy:


  • Formulating and implementing the overall Credit, Asset and Portfolio Risk strategy for the organization.

  • Monitoring the overall Risk Strategy through the Risk Matrix

  • Monitoring the overall compliance and relevance of the Credit Policy and procedures

  • Developing strategic relationship across the whole risk and legal industry

  • Member of the Credit and Risk Committee


3.6 Credit Assessment and Compliance


  • Ensure that the Credit policy and procedures are adhered to

  • SLA’s are adhered to

  • Introduce Kaizen program of continues improvement


3.7 Collection (Soft and Hard)


  • Develop and implement an end to end Collections strategy and Decision tree

  • Measure the effectiveness of the strategy

  • Introduce Kaizen program of continues improvement


3.8 Asset Management


  • Develop and implement an asset management strategy for all asset classes

  • Monitor asset values through an asset register

  • Develop a pro active asset disposal program for all asset classes


3.9 Portfolio Risk


  • Develop and implement a comprehensive total portfolios risk monitoring and assessment strategy

  • Implement counter measures or changes in policy to mitigate future portfolio risks


3.10 Risk Matrix


  • Develop and monitor overall Risk Matrix program for the business


3.11 Market/Industry intelligence


  • Stay informed on all current and future changes in the market and competitors that could impact the overall risk profile of business including changes to markets, products, credit, finance regulations/laws or entrees into the market

  • Keep up to date on the dynamics of the markets and industries where the company has the biggest exposure to customers and asset classes


4. Experiences and Key Attributes


  • More than 10 years of intimate knowledge and experience in managing the overall Risk and Credit portfolio for a finance (Asset base finance and leasing) company at a Senior/ Executive level.

  • Brilliant communicator

  • Strong and effective customer and industry network

  • Ability to build good internal and external relationships across reporting lines

  • Ability to fit in as a member of a team.

  • Strategic thinker as well as strong execution abilities

  • Must have a proven record of successfully managing a large portfolio or book across various asset classes and customer profiles

  • Must have a strong business minded approach to Risk and lending

  • Friendly, dynamic, professional, pro-active and forward thinking


5. Qualifications


  • Post Graduate degree or MBA from a reputable institution of higher learning.
