Duties and responsibilities 


  • Developing assurance engagement plans including identification and documentation of engagement objectives, engagement risks, materiality, sampling criteria, sample sizes and budgets.

  • Monitoring progress of audit engagements to ensure that they are within time and financial budgets.

  • Directing engagement opening and closing meetings with clients to ensure expectations are clearly identified, assessed, and met.

  • Consolidating audit findings and recommendations documented by engagement team members and drafting and audit report for review by the Assistant Director, Internal Audit.

  • Evaluating progress and effectiveness of action taken to implement audit recommendations received from internal and external audits;

  • Developing and documenting work programs that achieve the engagement objectives.

  • Providing leadership to engagement teams to ensure delivery on the engagement plan.

  • Providing input in the preparation of the Internal Audit budget and work plan;

  • Allocating work to engagement team members to ensure targets are effectively met;

  • Preparing performance appraisal targets with Senior Internal Auditors to meet the Internal Audit function’s objectives;

  • Reviewing financing agreements for projects and provide audit guidelines for project audits to auditors; and 

  • Monitor implementation of government circulars.

  • Mentoring and guiding internal audit staff.

Requirements for appointment/Persons Specification


  • At least six (6) years’ relevant work experience, three (3) of which must have been in a position of Internal Auditor or equivalent position in the public or private sector;

  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the following fields: Information Technology, Natural Resource Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution;

  • Minimum grade of C Plus (C+) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, or its equivalent;

  • Relevant professional qualification such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) or equivalent;

  • Membership to relevant professional bodies such as Institute of Certified Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), Institute of Internal Auditor (IIA), Information Systems Audit & Control Association (ISACA), or equivalent, in good standing;

  • Experience in the use of data analysis / Computer Aided Audit Tools (CAATS) tools;

  • Proficiency in computer applications;

  • Attended a supervisory course lasting not less than two (2) weeks or equivalent, from a recognized institution;

  • Demonstrated good results in work performance; and

  • Meets the requirements of Chapter six of the Constitution.
