“How often should i update my CV?” asks Mary Mukoba via email
There is a need for job seekers to constantly update your CV during their search. One of the main reasons for this is to tailor your strengths, capabilities and experiences to suit that of your potential employer.
Most applicants seeking to apply for their first job tend to use a single static CV, in the essence that they are never changed upon completion of their studies.
These are key areas that should be concentrated on when one is tailoring his/her CV to an employer.
Key Steps In Updating A CV
1.Update the Educational Section
This is a key area that tends to keep your CV up to date in as far as your educational background is concerned. Any additional short courses that you might have done post university/diploma should be included here. These might be computer courses,
2.Work Experience
This category normally confuses many applicants. Work in this case does not necessarily mean that you were paid. Internships, volunteering jobs and self employments can also be added here.
3.Always Update Your Referees in the CV
With an update in the work experience should also see an update in the reference section. This is someone that can vouch for you on a professional level.
4.Skills
Having additional work experience and improved educational background means that you have acquired additional skills that should be updated in this section.
Remember that it is vital that you align your CV details with the requirements of the employers in terms of job descriptions rather than use a single structured CV in all your applications.
