Manager, Wildlife Law Enforcement at AWF, Kenya
AWF is seeking a high performing and motivated professional to be primarily responsible for implementing AWF’s Wildlife Trafficking Law Enforcement Action Plan and serving as the technical lead on AWF activities to stop illegal movements of wildlife products within and from Africa.
This new position is part of AWF’s heightened response to curb the current poaching crisis facing Africa’s wildlife. AWF’s approach has three key elements running concurrently: stop the killing of endangered species; stop the trafficking of wildlife and their parts; stop the insatiable demand for wildlife products. The Manager – Wildlife Law Enforcement is a key member of AWF’s species protection team reporting to the Senior Director of Conservation Science.
AWF Law Enforcement Job Responsibilities
Advance AWF’s engagement in wildlife law enforcement work
Develop tools and guidelines for AWF and partner use in supporting wildlife law enforcement.
Provide training to ensure appropriate application of tools.
Articulate and advise on key legal aspects regarding AWF’s conservation canine programme.
Liaise with other organizations undertaking wildlife anti-poaching and anti-trafficking work.
Keep abreast new developments and share with partners and within AWF.
Reporting in a timely manner including monitoring and impact data.
Support species-related proposal writing and fundraising.
Improve capacity to enhance deterrent sentencing of wildlife crime
Undertake analyses of relevant laws and policies identifying gaps in primary and ancillary legislation, making recommendations to improve prosecutions.
Engage relevant authorities – wildlife, judiciary, prosecutorial, etc. – and other players to articulate training needs, develop curricula, identify participants, and undertake training towards enhancing successful prosecution of wildlife crime.
Assist in developing standard operating procedure (SOP) / guideline for prosecuting wildlife crime in each focal country.
Support wildlife crime prosecution to ensure successful completion
Provide technical and mentoring support to AWF partners including prosecution teams in relevant wildlife crime cases.
Follow-up, analyse and document process, outcomes and lessons learnt in target wildlife crime cases.
Any other business assigned by AWF
Qualifications for Law Enforcement Jobs in Kenya
A degree in law or enforcement is mandatory. Qualifications in relevant field, such as conservation biology, ecology, or project management are added advantage.
5+ years post degree direct experience in wildlife / environmental law enforcement especially species work, in Africa.
Experience working with multiple government agencies and partners in law enforcement support.
Knowledge and demonstrated interest in species, landscape conservation and management.
Experience managing and administering grants, either as a recipient or grantor.
Commitment to AWF mission and understanding of issues faced by AWF in delivering its mission.
Fluent in spoken and written English; French is added advantage.
Ability to communicate effectively through timely high-quality professional reports.
Ability to network strategically and communicate effectively with a wide group of partners, including proactive sharing of information and reporting.
Significant dexterity with computer packages including word, databases, storage, statistical analyses, reporting and internet skills.
Ability to work both as part of a team and also work independently as needed.
Demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
Excellent writing skills.
Good organizational skills.
Ability to fulfil mandatory AWF operations and financial procedures.
Willingness to travel
