Homa Hills Community Development Organization is a medium-sized national NGO located in Rachuonyo Sub County, Homa Bay County.
Its major partners include CRS Kenya, KCCB, USAID Aphia Plus, Kenya Seed Co. ltd and MONSANTO research organizations.
HHCDO strives to empower communities living within its catchment area in terms of their civic responsibilities, economic independence, food security, environmental conservation, public health and HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support for a just and equitable society.
Its overriding role is to build community capacity to facilitate sustainable development to support vulnerable groups.
CRS has recently notified HHCDO of availability of additional funds to support malaria activities in its catchment areas for a period of 5 months ending 30th September 2015.
In this regard, we seek to fill the following vacancy and invite qualified, dedicated and self motivated applicants.
Malaria Prevention Officer
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Build technical competencies of Community Health Care Providers in Malaria Prevention, treatment and care through trainings, onsite mentorships and peer to peer learning meetings in liaison with the MOH.
Together with the technical advisory team, review and improve technical strategies employed in Malaria treatment and care to ensure the project work plan is adhered to and implemented with measurable success.
Ensure the timely writing and submission of quality and accurate Malaria care and treatment reports quarterly, bi-weekly, and at all other requested times.
Ensure the spread and integration of lessons learnt to health facilities to improve the comprehensive care and treatment of Malaria.
In collaboration with the MOH staff, document best practices in form of case studies, success stories, abstracts, video clips in addition to the routine biweekly updates and quarterly reports.
In collaboration with the Monitoring and Evaluation team ensure that data collected is accurate and valid and captures process and outcome indicators.
Work closely with sub county management team to promote malaria prevention and management strategies within the sub county
Work closely with the Sub County Health Management Team and CHEWS to develop communication tools and strategies to improve acceptance and use of LLINs in the population
Participate in malaria related operational research e.g. Barrier analysis and use the results to inform the project
Conduct IEC/BCC activities at the health facility and community level to ensure maximum local impact and education.
Develop/adapt and disseminate IEC messages to improve women of reproductive age group’s awareness of the risk of malaria during pregnancy and promote the use of IPTp during various phases of pregnancy.
Organizing for community dialogues through chiefs barazas, churches and mobile clinics
Promote usage of rapid diagnosis tests (RDTs) at community level
Coordinate and work closely with other development partners and stakeholders in the project to ensure synergy and project success
In close collaboration with the MoH CHEWs organize the CHVs monthly meeting and monitor the project indicators
Support CHVs on home visits
Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Required Experience and Qualifications
Diploma in clinical medicine, Nursing, Community health, medical laboratory sciences or environmental Health. Degree in similar or related fields will be an added advantage.
At least 2 years experience in developing, implementing and reporting for community programs focused on health, including malaria and other services to women and children
Strong familiarity with communities and community health systems in Homa Bay County
Demonstrated ability to work with the community groups, MOH and civil society groups
Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills with proficiency (reading, writing, speaking and comprehension) in English
Demonstrated leadership and team management qualities including crises and conflict management and mediation
Proficiency in computer application; word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation packages and internet applications highly desirable
Ability to carry out independent work with initiative, creativity and good judgment without close supervision
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse staff, consultants and project beneficiaries
