Consultant, Integration of Quality Improvement into Pre-Service Training
University Research Co., LLC (URC) USAID Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems (ASSIST) Project, is a global leader in the implementation, advocacy, development and promotion of cost-effective methods to design and improve healthcare services and systems in developing and middle income countries.
URC is looking for a consultant to support review and revision of preservice training curriculum for medical students to include quality improvement concepts.
1. Overview: The overall objective of USAID |ASSIST is to foster improvements in a range of health care processes through the application of modern improvement methods by host country providers and managers in USAID-assisted countries.
Developing the core competencies of health workers in improvement is a key contribution towards institutionalizing health system strengthening.
The best way to begin systematic competency building, is through integration in pre-service training.
This will ensure that health workers are prepared to continually improve health services in order to improve outcomes.
2. Purpose: Reporting directly to the Senior Quality Improvement Advisor, the consultant will conduct institutional readiness assessment, collaboratively design and coordinate implementation of models to build improvement competencies amongst healthcare students in selected tertiary training institutions.
The consultant’s work will involve national, regulatory bodies, and training institutions as stakeholders.
3. Scope of Work
The consultant will:
a) Conduct assessment of selected institutions’ current curriculums for health care improvement approaches and analyze data for priority gaps and factors critical for implementation success.
b) Review available QI training material with guidance from ASSIST experts that can serve as resources for skills development.
c) Review available pre-service (core) curricula to identify potential areas of integration
d) Review standard educational approaches and existing QI training approaches and design an optimal blended learning approach.
e) Design a TOT training plan for faculty together with ASSIST experts. The consultant is responsible, with guidance, for developing the training materials and training plan and coordinating the training of faculty, clinical instructors, preceptors and mentors.
f) Provide instructional design technical support and coordinate the implementation of the QI integration process.
g) Develop an appropriate, simple monitoring and evaluation framework.
4. Deliverables
a) A comprehensive assessment report on the intuitions’ current curriculums for QI.
b) Curriculum review workshop report.
c) QI curriculum with clearly defined content, schedule of delivery, mode of delivery and instructors and students manual.
d) Monitoring and evaluation framework.
e) Faculty and QI instructor TOT training plan and training materials.
f) Faculty QI training report.
g) Implementation progress reports.
5. Contract duration and rate
60 days consultancy at an agreed rate.
Payment will be pegged on the hours worked each day up to a maximum of 8 hours per day.
6. Required Competencies and experience of consultant
Knowledge of adult learning principles and communication styles.
Knowledge of and extensive experience with instructional design methodologies for higher education. Knowledge of training measurement and assessment/evaluation techniques.
Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments and persistence when faced with challenges.
Education: Master’s degree in Medicine, Public Health, Education or related field. PHD will be an added advantage.
Work Experience:
- At least 3 years in curriculum development and clinical training in either public or private sector.
- Experience working with a learning management system highly desirable.
- Extensive hands on experience and knowledge of learning systems.
7. Payment
This is a 60 day consultancy. The consultant will work at a rate determined in accordance to his/her qualifications and USAID rules and regulations.
