To support the the Criminal Justice Advisor (CJA) in delivering the FCO’s Capacity Building Programme in the criminal justice sector in Kenya. This role is an opportunity to support a high profile foreign policy priority by helping the Kenyan security sector to tackle terrorism in line with international human rights standards.
The successful applicant will have an interest in security and justice issues and be able to use their project management and administrative skills to deliver in a fast paced political environment. The successful applicant will be a member of the new Counter Terrorism and Extremism Network working to increase the safety of Kenyan and British Nationals in the region.
This is a new position and the successful candidate will need to be flexible and adaptable as the job roles and responsibilities may evolve with changing programme priorities.
Roles and Responsibilities :
- Deliver project work to enhance bi-lateral cooperation and progress UK priorities
- Contribute to evolving developments of project design, monitoring and evaluation for the criminal justice strand of the programme
- Liaise with key external partners through formal communications and establish good working relationships to accelerate project delivery
- Deputise for the CJA at relevant meetings and manage the office in the absence of the CJA, handling enquiries or referring onwards as appropriate
- Monitor spend on criminal justice activity through accurate budgeting and forecasting, ensuring value for money, processing and receipting invoices, etc.
- Work closely with the CT Programme Officer to report on monthly spend and progress relating to criminal justice activity
- Act as the lead co-ordinator for FOI responses and Subject Access Requests
- Case management of UK Mutual legal assistance (MLA) and extradition requests including initial review and triage– liasing with external partners across the UK and Kenyan criminal justice community
- Research legal and non-legal topics as required and present the findings logically and coherently
- Provide logistical support to project delivery by designing and organising training workshops, seminars, etc.
- Support the CJA with programme administrative assistance by facilitating travel and meeting requirements, and accompanying the CJA to meetings to take minutes and where required draw up agreed action plans
- Provide additional support to the Counter Terrorism and Extremism Network as and when required
- BA Degree or above from an internationally accredited university
- Excellent IT skills
- A business management and/or project management qualification
- Strong communication skills and extensive experience of developing good working relationships with key stakeholders at all levels
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
- Experience of monitoring spend and processing invoices
- A flexible and proactive approach
- Fluent in English
- Experience working in the security/justice sector
- Experience working with legal frameworks and the judiciary system
