Project Manager at Zoological Society

We’re ZSL, an international conservation charity. Our vision is a world where wildlife thrives and we’re working every day to achieve this. From investigating the health threats facing animals, to helping people and wildlife live alongside each other, we are committed to bringing wildlife back from the brink of extinction. Through the work of our pioneering scientists, our dedicated conservationists and our unrivalled animal experts in our two zoos, our purpose is to inspire, inform and empower people to stop wild animals going extinct.

The Project Manager (PM) will be in charge of the planning, implementation, monitoring and supervision of project activities in conformity with the BIOPAMA project document and donor’s and ZSL’s internal procedures. The PM will work on a 1 year fixed term contract under the supervision of the project Principal Investigator (PI) and will be responsible for project team coordination and for the close collaboration of various key staff from partner organisations, Oikos East Africa (OEA) and the Southern Rift Association of Land Owners (SORALO). The postholder could be based in e.g. Nairobi but with a very regular presence at the project site and occasional travel to Tanzania.

The post relates to the management of a transboundary project (funded by IUCN/BIOPAMA) spanning a central part of the Kenya-Tanzania border, and reaching from Lake Natron across to the Nguruman / Loitas area. Here we aim to protect Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) through the sustainable management of rangelands and water-catchment. Themes included in the project are land use planning, women’s livelihoods, conservation education, and human-wildlife conflict.

  • Coordinating and leading training in human-wildlife conflict (mostly carnivores)

  • Organising and leading local and transboundary workshops on human-wildlife conflict (mostly carnivores) and grazing management

  • Managing and coordinating project work plans and activities in close liaison with the partner organisations.

  • In coordination with the assistant PM of Oikos in Tanzania and the SORALO PM in Kenya, coordinating the implementation of project activities, and ensuring that monthly time sheets and reports are submitted.

  • Developing and supporting the implementation of the Monitoring & Evaluation Plan, and monitoring the impact of project activities and results against the workplan.

  • In collaboration with the relevant finance and administrative managers, ensuring that spending and financial reporting occurs within project budget limits and in compliance with donor and ZSL’s regulations, and that fund transfers are planned and made in good time.

  • Compiling monthly, three-monthly and annual technical reports based on the reports of the partners, plus ensuring that workshop and any other reports are developed.

  • Ensuring effective working relations and communications between partners, and ensuring good relations are being maintained with project stakeholders, e.g., communities and government.

  • Making regular site visits to field sites on the Kenyan side and potentially visiting the Tanzanian side.

  • Contributing to any scientific publications on e.g. rangeland management co-authored within the BIOPAMA project.

  • Compiling photographic and audio-visual material on a monthly basis.

  • Providing technical support for project activities as required.

  • A Bachelor or Masters Degree in Science (Wildlife Biology, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Agronomy, Forestry or related subject).

  • Proven experience in human-wildlife / carnivore coexistence.

  • Proven experience in management of environmental projects with capacity to plan and oversee the implementation of field activities and in running training workshops.

  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation of projects.

  • Excellent report writing skills and computer literacy.

  • Strong experience in a collaborative working environment of government and community partners.

  • Effective communication, motivating leadership and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent command of spoken and written English language and Kiswahili are expected.

  • Ability to drive a car and be in possession of a valid driving licence.

  • Experience and skills in the following will be considered a strong advantage:

  • Experience of working within international projects and within EU / IUCN / BIOPAMA grants.
