Essay Writing Competition

Introductory Note: The Competition Authority of Kenya (the Authority) is established under the Competition Act, No. 12 of 2010 (the Act). 

The Authority’s mandate is to enforce the Act with the object of enhancing the welfare of the people of Kenya by promoting and protecting effective competition in markets and preventing misleading market conduct throughout Kenya.It endeavors to achieve the above outcome through control of mergers; unwarranted concentration of economic power; prohibition of Abuse of Dominance; regulation of concerted practices and prohibition of unfair and misleading market conduct. Effective competition and regulation together contribute to economic growth and welfare while creating an atmosphere that supports innovation. With this objective and with the aim of encouraging
intellectual discourse among students on Competition Law and Policy, the Authority is introducing an Essay writing competition.
This Essay writing competition is open for ALL students of both public and private Universities. In addition the competition is aimed at promoting writing and analytical skills among University students while encouraging research and analysis on these important topics:
What is meant by effective competition?When evaluating mergers of competitors how should the Competition Authority of Kenya balance increased efficiency from larger scale production with less competition from only having a few local producers?Students must write on the topic in English.The Essay shall be original and unpublished and must not exceed 2500 words.Copying from books/newspapers is prohibited unless for specific case references.The Essay must be typed using font 12 in Times New Roman and saved in Word File.For print outs kindly use both sides of the paper (Duplex printing)Primary consideration will be given to the Essay’s originality and its contribution to new knowledge, insights and creative approach. Undergraduate and Postgraduate Essays will be judged and awarded separately.
Essays will be judged according to the following Criteria:Substance and originality e.g concept and grasp of competition issues (50 marks)Clarity, creativity and practicality. (20marks)Writing style, compositions and organization. (15 marks)Language, grammar and presentation. (15 marks)* Shortlisted Students will be expected to make a presentation to a panel 1 prize- Fees worth 50,000/=2nd prize- Fees worth 30,000/=1 prize- Fees worth 80,000/=2nd prize- Fees worth 50,000/=* The winning Essays shall be recommended for publication in prestigious global journals
* Both the winning and runners up students will be awarded certificates of honour.
* The fees will be paid directly to the respective Universities

Short Term Competition Officer

The EAC Competition Act deals with issues of anti monopoly, cartels and unfair distributions, consumer protection, mergers and acquisitions among other areas. The EAC competition authority is to be established hinged on national authorities.The short term Competition Officer is requested to undertake activities that are related with competition law of EAC as relating to EAC Customs Union and Common Market.Any queries should be directed to procurement@trademarkea.com. The closing date for expressions is 10th September 2012. Application forms should be emailed to procurement@trademarkea.com.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission was established by the Constitution of Kenya with the mandate of among others; conducting voter education, delimitation of constituencies and wards, registration of voters, registration of candidates for elections, conduct and supervise elections and referenda and facilitation of the observation, monitoring and evaluation of elections.

Pursuant to the mandate of conducting voter education, IEBC requires well designed posters that will capture any of the following themes:

i) Youth Participation in elections

ii) Peaceful electioneering and voting

iii) Acceptance of election results

iv) Individual responsibility for participation in elections

v) Women Participation in election

vi) Come out and Vote

IEBC calls upon creative and artistic Kenyans to submit posters on the above six themes.

The following guidelines, rules and regulations shall apply:

The poster should be in black and white and also in high resolution colour.Each Poster should be submitted in 6 hard copies on A3 orA4 size paper and a soft copy in PDF, JPEG or TIFF in a windows readable CDThe submission must be original and not copied from any other published sources including books, magazines or newspapersThe poster should have a tagline in Kiswahili or English that provides instant information.Entrants must give a brief explanation (Max 300 words) of their inspiration for the posterEach entrant should provide his/her name, postal address, email and Telephone numberThe decision of IEBC judges shall be final and shall not be open to any appeals whatsoeverAny materials, graphic software or other items prepared by an entrant shall belong and shall remain the property of IEBCOne can compete in more than one theme. School and College students are encouraged to participate Winners will receive a cash prize and will have the opportunity to present their work to IEBC CommissionersCash Prize:

The winning posters shall be awarded ¡n order of merit as below:

1st Position - 75,000

2nd Position - 50,000

3rd Position - 25,000

Posters should be presented ¡n plain envelopes and clearly marked IEBC POSTER COMPETITION.

The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) has been mandated by the Government of Kenya to erect a National Monument in honour of the National Heroes and Heroines at the Mashujaa Square, Uhuru Gardens.

NMK seeks design competition from eligible firms to provide quality design, which enhances recognition of the Heroes and Heroines of Kenya.

Objective

NMK is running a competition whose objective is to select a design proposal for a utilitarian and functional monument that should symbolize our National unity, integrity, diversity and richness while capturing the spirit of selflessness and sacrifice demonstrated by our heroes and heroines.

The proposed design should also embody tangible and intangible heritage. It should be uniquely Kenyan, have an exhibition space, shrine, a documentation space, public amenities, clear passage and be able to hold at least 500 people at once as an entity.

It should be in harmony with the surroundings and made of weather compliant materials.

Submission Requirements

Competitors should be Kenyan citizens preferably from a consortia of qualified architects, sculptors, artists and designers.Participating Consortia must demonstrate competence in areas of architecture, engineering, design, quantity survey and art with at least six years of experience as outlined in a portfolio.A brief report outlining detailed design plans, construction method, materials to be used and finishes.A 3-Dimensiional model of the monument in relation to the site measuring 150cm by 150cm.Submitted entries should be anonymous; however they should be number-coded as per the Terms of reference conditions.The following prizes will be awarded to the winning competitors by the client (National Museums of Kenya):
Model design placed 1st Ksh.300,000/=Model design placed 2nd Ksh.200,000/=Model design placed 3rd Ksh.100,000/=Interested eligible candidates, may obtain further information and detailed Design, Terms of Reference from the Office of the Principal Procurement Officer at the National Museums of Kenya Headquarters, Museum Hill road during normal working hours.

The candidates are advised to visit the Heroes and Heroines corner at Uhuru Gardens, Langata Road, Nairobi for information.

Complete set of design proposal shall be wax sealed and delivered to:
