To provide editorial and administrative support to the Media & Communication functions to ensure publications are produced in good quality and in a timely fashion. The successful candidate will work with the Communications Officer and contracted service providers in art, design, and production to keep publications on track.
Fixed term contract of 3 months with a probation period of 1 month.Reporting to the Media & Communications Officer, the post holder will:-Interact with line programme officers to ensure the publications are on schedule forproduction.Assist in coordinating various publications and IEC materials through internal andexternal processes (e.g. graphic design/layout and quality control).Copy edit and proofread draft publications and fact check to ensure accuracy.Ensure the look and feel of publications adhere to the KHRC house style.Provide administrative and clerical support to the department.Performs other duties as assigned.To be successful in this role the post holder will have the following:Bachelor of Arts degree in English or Journalism (preferred)Experience in copy-editing and proofreading.Knowledge of artwork presentation (ability to discuss composition, design, etc.) requiredKnowledge of human rights writing is an added advantage.Experience with Microsoft Office Suite is required and familiarity with InDesign is anadded advantageStrong writing skills; especially good grammar and spelling skills Copyediting and proofreading skills Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing required. Strong analytical skills Good interpersonal skills Must have the ability to pay close attention to details. Must have the ability to organize. Must have the ability to meet deadlines, work well under time constraints and handle multiple project elements simultaneously.

ReliefWeb Editorial Assistant SB3 Level 5 - (2 Posts)

Duties and Responsibilities

Assist the Editor in charge of the time zone in managing the daily updating of ReliefWeb content during Nairobi operation hours:

• Ensure the timely delivery of relevant and quality content provided by information partners and sources

• Ensure timely initiation of coverage for sudden onset crises/disasters

• Ensure the agreed outputs are delivered within the operating hours allotted to the Nairobi editorial team

• Ensure the adherence to the established work flow and editorial guidelines by the editorial team members assigned to the time zone

• Coordinate and provide direct supervision to the work of the editorial contractors and interns when applicable

• Coordinate content management with the editorial teams in other duty stations and ensure appropriate hand-over on a daily basis

• Monitor and report any technical problems as per the standard operating procedures

• Perform the function of Editor in charge of the time zone during his/her absence

Assist in continuous enhancements of the ReliefWeb content and services:

• Take part in detailed monitoring and analysis of the situations under the geographical responsibilities of the office

• Contribute to the discussion on content strategy and enhancement development projects as appropriate

• Contribute to the promotion of the use of the ReliefWeb platform and further engagement with information partners as appropriate

Perform any other duties as assigned

Competencies Professionalism

Knowledge of editorial standards and online information management guidelines.
Ability to undertake independent research, identify and assess issues and develop accurate retrieval tools for relevant materials for the needs of a specialized audience (humanitarian response community).
Ability to apply controlled subject terminology to add metadata to documents published online. Ability to follow specialized classification guidelines and to follow specific document selection criteria.

Planning and Organising

Ability to work with minimal amount of supervision, sound organisational skills and ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work plan.

Initiative and willingness to learn new skills and flexibility to changes in assignment.

Technological Awareness

Solid computer skills, particularly in using relevant information databases, internet services, website editor and “spider” search software, and library sources.

Terms of Service

The Service Contract is a modality of hiring of UNDP development project personnel, where UNDP at the request of an executing entity, or implementing partner under the harmonized operational modalities or where UNDP itself serves as executing entity/implementing partner of a development project provides personnel contracting services to support execution or implementation of the project.

This is a non-staff contract under the Service Contract modality of hiring of the UNDP. Individuals engaged under a SC serve in their individual capacity and not as representatives of a government institution, corporative body or other authority external to UNDP. Therefore the incumbents shall not be considered as staff of UNDP, the UN system or the Government and therefore are not entitled to any diplomatic privileges, or to any other special status or conditions.

Required Skills and Expertise

Education:

KCSE Grade C and certificate in either international affairs, social sciences, library sciences, or other related studies relevant to humanitarian affairs are desirable. University degree is an added advantage.

Experience:

At least three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience within the UN system or with entities operating in the humanitarian, human rights or development sector, including experience in communication, information management, online editing, desktop publishing or journalism.

Language and IT Skills:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required; knowledge of second official UN language desirable.

• Knowledge of automated information systems as applied to libraries and/or information networks.

• Practical skills in using PC-based office automation software are mandatory.

• Practical skills in using hypertext Markup Language (HTML), World Wide Web, Front-page Editor or other HTML editor software, are essential.

• Practical skills in applying controlled subject terminology to add metadata to documents published online.
