Job Summary: Under the CIMMYT SIP (SIMLESA and TAMASA) Projects, the incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the development of tools / applications and providing technical and analytical / data management support to SIP scientists and SIP projects in Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania.
Roles and Responsibilities
1. Technical
- Experience in programming with Java cript, phython and R computing languages
- Good knowledge of SQL and web-based geo-server system development and administration
- Develop tools/ applications using open source computing resources
- Organize, manage and coordinate on-station and on-farm field trials
- Carry out surveys and organise participatory evaluations
- Manage data collection from field trials and surveys
- Carry out data entry, management and analysis of field trials and survey data
- Visualise data in GIS/geo-spatial tools and software
- Assist in drafting technical reports and journal papers from CIMMYT research related work.
- Support other research associates in their duties as and when required
- Provide technical support to SIMLESA and TAMASA scientists
2. Networking and Workshops
- Network with partners/stakeholders and support/train them in cropping system, data collection and analysis
- Assist in drafting seminar, workshop and conference papers
- Organize, attend and participate in training workshops, project meetings
3. Administration
- Supervise field staff
- Any other duties and miscellaneous tasks as required and as assigned from time to time.
Skill Set
- A Master’s degree in Geomatics / GIS / Data Management / Statistics or in an Agriculture-related discipline.
- A Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or related field
- Strong programming skills
- Strong statistical/ analytical skills
- Strong GIS skills and use of ARCVIEW or other geo-spatial packages
- Evidence of experience in draft technical reports and journal papers
- Practical experience in field experimental work
- Ability to prioritize and organize work efficiently and independently
- Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure with minimal supervision
- Good interpersonal skills, integrity, honesty and self-motivation
- Able to work well within a team
- Driving competency
- Willingness to travel in the region
Work experience
- Minimum of two (2) years working experience
