About Grounds for Health


Grounds for Health is an international non-profit organization with the mission to reduce cervical cancer among women in developing countries. The organization is based in the United States with staff there and in Nicaragua, Peru and Ethiopia. The University of Washington (UW) Treatment, Research and Expert Education (TREE) has contributed to medical research in infectious diseases, developed local capacity through training and clinical mentorship, and delivered services in HIV care and prevention and cervical cancer screening and treatment in Kenya for over 25 years.


In November 2015, through close partnership with UW TREE and with support from the Nyeri County Health Executive and local coffee cooperatives, Grounds for Health plans to initiate a cervical cancer screening and preventive therapy program in Nyeri County, Kenya. The goal is to establish a program that will demonstrate full coverage of cervical cancer prevention services in Nyeri County, serving as a model for Kenya.


Position Summary


Grounds for Health seeks a Kenya Program Coordinator to execute a high quality program in Nyeri County. The person will be supervised by a US-based Program Manager and will work closely with UW TREE, the Ministry of Health, local coffee cooperatives, and other health and NGO partners to deliver cervical cancer prevention services. This is a full time, paid position, based in Nyeri and requires regular travel throughout the County.


The Program Coordinator will:


  • Train, monitor and supervise health personnel in screening and treatment of cervical lesions.

  • Establish a strong relationship with the County Health Executive and all levels of the Ministry of Health to ensure provider productivity and clinical quality.

  • Implement data management systems and report monthly productivity results, using Kenya MOH forms and working closely with the TREE Data Manager.

  • Ensure referral systems for appropriate follow-up of patients with abnormal results.

  • Coordinate logistics of trainings, campaigns, and ongoing service delivery.

  • Procure and distribute supplies and equipment to health centers.

  • Use internet-enabled digital cervicography to engage the Clinical Director and TREE Doctor in review of cases.

  • Train community health promoters to promote cervical cancer awareness and prevention services, achieved through close coordination with coffee cooperatives, Ministry of Health, and other local partners.

  • Represent Grounds for Health in Kenya, attend regular meetings with local partners, and cultivate relationships with other organizations.

  • Pursue and execute expansion opportunities as identified by the CEO, Program Manager, and locally.

  • Maintain open communication with the Grounds for Health Program Manager, including weekly reports and Skype calls.

  • Manage field expenses, including appropriate documentation and monthly reporting.

Requirements/Qualifications


  • Appropriate medical qualifications: Licensed doctor, clinical officer or nurse with primary health care delivery experience. Work in women’s health preferred. Experience with VIA and cryotherapy a plus.

  • Prior experience working for or with the Ministry of Health in Kenya.

  • Prior experience in training and mentoring.

  • Project management skills, including logistics management, financial tracking, and data monitoring and reporting.

  • Proven ability to work independently and with remote supervision.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Flexibility and an entrepreneurial spirit; willingness to seek new relationships and opportunities for program expansion and results.

  • MS Office skills: Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

  • Conversational fluency in Kikuyu, Swahili, and English.
