Managing Director (Re-Advertised) at Emerging Talent

Summary


Emerging Talent is working with an award-winning social venture, to hire a visionary Managing Director to head up their safe, sustainable sanitation solution, who will lead an exceptional, mission-driven team and guide our strategy, operations, and expansion across Kenya.


Roles and responsibilities:


Strategy & Planning



  • Continuously build insight into the business model, market position, broader climate, risks, and opportunities so that the organisation can successfully navigate towards our goal of serving urban areas throughout Kenya.

  • Craft a clear and inspiring strategy with support from the Board and global leadership and drive implementation to serve 1M people across Kenya with inclusive and high-quality non-sewered sanitation services by 2026 Execution.

  • Own the P&L, including setting and performing to revenue targets, innovating on revenue sources, and continuously refining the business model to reach our ultimate goal of break-even.

  • Set annual objectives that directly tie to achieving our 5-year strategic goals, communicate them throughout the organization to guide our work year to year, and drive execution by building a culture and processes for recognition and accountability.

  • Spearhead the delivery of impactful initiatives, implementing continuous improvements for service enhancement at both national and county office levels and ensuring that key performance indicators are met.

  • Inspire the team to keep work moving forward by balancing competing priorities, making effective decisions, and generating innovative ideas in Government & External Relations.

  • Build long term, trusting relationships with crucial external stakeholders, particularly government partners, that enable our operations and strategy to succeed.

  • Secure formal partnerships and contracts with utilities, as well as national and county governments in order to expand and sustain our operations.

  • Be the face of the organisation in Kenya and represent our brand to enhance our ability to achieve our mission.

  • Actively network by using existing and newly established connections to build and enhance the company’s public profile at events, conferences, and speaking engagements.


Leadership, People, and Culture



  • Model leadership behaviours and our values to build a positive, thriving team culture that enables a rapidly growing, high-performing team of 265 to succeed.

  • Build an effective organizational structure that both empowers and nurtures a culture of accountability so that we are executing towards our goals.

  • Develop and coach a team of leaders empowered to lead strategy, people, and implementation in each of their domains towards shared goals.


Organizational Operations



  • Steer the financial health of the company, including driving financial planning and analysis, forecasting, and financial and administrative operational excellence

  • Develop and maintain KPIs and targets for all direct reports and business units, and oversee the accountability and accomplishment of each target set


Qualifications



  • 10+ years experience in operations, corporate leadership, managing people and budgets.

  • Strong experience in developing and executing a business strategy.

  • Commercial acumen with proven ability to create opportunities for growth within an organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to build concrete and sustained operational partnerships with government.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing country-wide teams with diverse professional development needs.

  • Critical and analytical thinking skills; ability to work with both large and limited amounts of data to develop strategy and make rigorous decisions.

  • Highly organized with a high capacity to problem solve and establish priorities for self and team.

  • Ability to inspire confidence and instil trust both internally and externally.

  • Strong negotiator, with a proven ability to secure new opportunities or gain the best deal.

  • Proven success in building strong and effective people-centric teams.

  • Demonstrated passion for the organization’s mission, values and customers.

  • Excited about driving impact at scale and portfolio growth.
