Lilian  Sent us this unedited email.
I have been feeling really uncomfortable at work lately. my boss has been acting very strange with me. He often asks me to go out to lunch with him. I get rewarded with things when I haven't even done anything worth being rewarded.

When I ask him why I am being rewarded with a gift card if i didn't do anything extraordinary he says its just
because. I am 25 and am married and he is 40-something and also is married and has 3 kids. Not to mention he is not a good looking man--so of course I am not flattered.

He also always wants to chat with me a lot at work, asks me personal questions, and obviously goes out of his way to help me with anything, even things that are not work related. He is not this way at all with any of my other coworkers and I'm tired of being seen as "the favorite".

I don't want to accept his gifts but don't want to seem like an ingrate. I also mentioned all of this to my husband so I can get a mans perspective but he says that maybe he just appreciates me and I should not assume anything wrong and that not all men are trying to get in my pants.

I want to think that way too but I have that gut feeling and it makes me very uncomfortable to be around him. what do i do?

Jimmy had been working for the same IT Company for almost ten years

His employer was a new IT company when he joined the company as an intern. He performed well, and was soon hired as a professional IT consultant in the software department.

Jimmy had great customer facing skills. Clients loved his work. He won an excellent employee award two years after he joined the company. He was doing great.

On the 3rd year and now 28 years, Jimmy then married and started a family. He didn’t want to travel as much as he used to be. So, he talked to his manager, and made a transition to in house software development instead of travelling to meet clients all over the country. He was still working on the same product that he was implementing at client sites. He now worked on adding new features as well as maintaining the software.

On the 4th year, there was a disruptive change in the market. The product Jimmy has been working on started losing market share. It was still used by a sizable number of clients, but its growth was starting to level down.

On the 5th and 6th year, the product was becoming obsolete. It was clear to everyone that the company would soon end-of-life the product.

Jimmy was the only person who was working on this product. He felt threatened a little bit. But, he was waiting for his green card. If he moved to another company, he would have to start all over again.

Jimmy could try to move into a different role. But, he had been settling nicely into his existing role — he was the expert in the product. He had a lot going on at home — with two little kids, he had to spend a lot of energy on the home front. He enjoyed the familiar work that he was doing everyday — it afforded him flexibility to balance work and life.

On the 7th and 8th year, the company kept losing customers. It’s apparent to everyone that in 12 to 18 month, the product would no longer be supported.

At that time, there was plenty of rumors that the company would be acquired by a large company. The employees might finally see an exit event. Although it wouldn’t make Jimmy a millionaire, it would still mean a healthy amount of cash.
Jimmy wanted to wait until the exit event took place. His plan was to cash out, and then looked for another job.

On the 9th year, the world economy was hit by the credit crisis. None of the acquisition rumors became reality. Sad news was to follow. His job was eliminated. He was laid off. He was very disheartened by what had happened to him.

He had a lot of fears about what would happen next. He hadn’t looked for a job for 9 years. A lot of the stuff he worked on were very specific to the particular company and product — in other words, they’re not very transferable. It was going to be hard getting another job with the old skills.

Don’t let yourself get into similar situation.

If you work in the IT industry, you should be ready to switch job every few years. The industry changes too fast.
But this advice applies to all of us. You in banking, finance, marketing, HR etc……..

Don’t let yourself get too comfortable

You need to continue to renew your knowledge and skills by moving to a new company.

It is very risky to place all of your bet on a single employer.

Expect the unexpected when you plan your career moves.

Quote of the day….If you don’t change, reality in the end forces that change upon you

Consider this, you have been called for a customer service job interview or a position requiring someone with good customer service skills either because you are good at it or you have it well highlighted in your CV and cover letter, so how will you present yourself in the interview?

Most of us tend to think that customer service is all about, answering client’s questions and handling their complaints. So you walk right to the interview room and there you are, you voice suddenly goes down, you barely keep an eye contact with the interviewer and all you can say to support your customer skills is “I am good with people” how? Being talkative and social is beside the point.

Customer service jobs require maturity, an engaging mind, good listening skills and ability to identify customer’s needs and assist as appropriate.

Juzi juzi I happened to go to the bank to make a transaction so when my turn came ,I presented myself at the counter and guess what, the lady Teller barely looked up to acknowledge my presence and goes on to work on her computer for about five minutes before she finally looked up with capital attitude and waited for me to speak…well, I simply said Hi, gave her my bank slip and forgave her for what I may never understand .

She might have had a bad day, a quarrel with her supervisor or just in low moods which can happen to anyone but did I have to suffer her wrath? I mean, she must know customer service that’s why she’s at the front counter in the first place.
A Customer Service Representative says the right things and transacts the business not only with efficiency but also with an air of difference and like everyone else, customer service Officers/Representatives ought to treat clients you with courtesy and respect and be show the same in return.

On the other hand, if a customer service provider shows a sincere willingness to serve and makes an earnest attempt to get it right but misses a few of the key skills, you’ll still appreciate their efforts and in most cases, feel satisfied.
Customer service-whether that means selling clothes or fixing electronics is an intrinsically rewarding profession.

The people who understand this fact are the ones who excel and who help to distinguish their company from its competitors. If you have served customers before you know how crazy it can get, because it means dealing with people of all backgrounds, some rude, some polite others just stubborn but at the end of the day, your job should matter more.

Your boss is certainly aware of the things you have to go through that even he himself wouldn’t know how to handle therefore they are relying on you entirely to project the company’s image in the best way possible out there.
Professions that deal directly with clients can be very successful.

How many times have you referred your friends to a certain boutique, restaurant and even estate kiosk because the people in charge are very friendly and helpful to customers? If you are in sales for example, the only way to close a deal is by saying the right words to your prospects and even when they were not for the idea to buy your products or services, your approach does the magic.

Every time you apply for a job that requires customer service skill, be assured that the interviewers will focus more in finding this skill in you than on the papers you’ll present to them. Better still, customer service does not focus more on the academic qualifications. If you are good at it but lack the papers, consider using the skill itself to your advantage.

How do you go about job searching? With over 100,000 job-related websites already on the internet and the rising number of recruiting agencies, you must have used a few of these options. To avoid wasting your time, you need a plan. A plan in which you have set goals that will guide you in looking for that job you really want.

It does not help subscribing to each career website and registering with every recruiting agency, without first researching on how they go about the process. Most of these sites and agencies already have too many CV s in their database and again some rarely update their websites. It is therefore advisable to go for only those that at least have daily or weekly job updates.

Recruiting agencies have CV databases where a job seekers post their CVs stating the kind of jobs they are looking for. Recruiting Managers will always revisit these databases every time there is an opportunity they have been consulted to recruit for by various companies and employers.

The CVs therein are given first priority even before opening the usual applications that are normally done online or through hard copies. These agencies vary in their way of operations. The most common method is where a job seeker registers with a recruiting agency/firm with some fee. Note that this method has it is shortcomings. You may end up spending a lot of money to have your CV registered with a certain agency and wait forever to be called for an opening.

It sounds very assuring when you commit yourself with the payment because after all job seeking is not an easy task. But be very careful not to invest in something that you have no faith in. It’s obvious that some of these agencies out there are out to make money from poor and desperate job seekers without sticking to the agreement.

However, some agencies are practical even with the registration fee. If you’ve already registered with one, it is important to note that sometimes you may not always get the job as fast as you want it for the fact that these openings are not always available in the job market and again, even when they are available, the requirements are very specific.

For instance, a company may consult a recruiting agency to hire certain candidates on their behalf. The recruiting agency will then shortlist from the CVs it has in the database. In this database, the recruiting professionals are likely to find so many candidates but with same qualifications and because this agency has to get the best quality out of the numerous number, the short listing standards go up and this is where additional details such as a professionally written CV, outstanding roles apart from the usual requirements such as leadership roles are used to shortlist. Woe unto you if your CV is poorly presented, or in the hurry to have your CV in the database, you left out vital information hence instantly disqualifying yourself.

I have come across similar CVs, same qualifications, same certificates ,same everything, but there is always that one or two CVs with same details as the rest but professionally written and well executed making such candidates stand out from the large crowd.

This therefore calls for a well thought out job seeking plan, consider reviewing your CV and redoing it professionally or consulting professionals to do it for you. It is painful to have a very qualified candidate whose skills, abilities and ambitions are almost readable, but because of the poor presentation of the details in their CV, they never get called for an interview.

Secondly, if you already have a well-written CV but still in the process of securing a job, consider adjusting your goals to something more flexible or consulting a professional on various approaches of identifying those areas that you fit in with your qualifications.

Remember that so many people out there are spending a lot of time and investing a lot in the job seeking process and the best way to stand out from this crowd is by having a marketing document that represents you in the best way possible in the job market.

If you have registered with a recruiting agency that also advises on CV writing and careers, consider using these services. In fact most of these firms will always give first priority to those clients that have already used their services such as CV writing and career coaching for the fact that they have interacted with these people and can relate to their professional needs.

It’s now official; our graduates are starting their career journey more stressed that earlier anticipated. We have some going for as long as 10 years without a job, only a pile of certificates to show, and what’s even worse is that in the struggle to fight joblessness, many are ending up with countless diplomas and degrees that add nothing else but frustrations.

One major reason for this is that not many companies can afford to hire and train new employees. Having had experience from a recruiting firm, many companies and organizations resort to internal recruitment, short-term work placements,  or hiring interns because most of them find these options less costly than hiring inexperienced candidates and then training them for the job.

This leads us to that common question, where then are fresh graduates expected to get the experience required if companies do not offer the chance in the first place?

To make matters worse, graduates, when applying for a job, are competing with more experienced people who have either been laid off during the crisis or would like to switch career paths. Many graduates complain that they might have done really well in the interview, but they didn’t make the cut because the company decided to go in another direction with someone who has more relevant experience.

Due to the lack of opportunities, these more knowledgeable individuals, in the real sense, settle for junior positions.

One of the solutions to this challenge which has become common place is Graduate trainee programs. Go to any recruiting firm or a company that has advertised for a graduate trainee vacancy and you;’’ be surprised just how unprepared the job market is for the numerous number of individuals who graduate yearly. Well, these programs are ideal as they offer someone a chance to start over or to pursue their career; however, graduate programs are exclusive.

You find yourself competing with individuals from around the country. It’s almost like buying a lottery ticket. Obviously only a lucky few are selected to attend the assessment day, a day where companies evaluate the candidates with incessant interviews, reasoning tests and case studies. The candidate either demonstrates their skills and knowledge or doesn’t get the job. Graduate programs are for those that possess patience and can be very resilient.

An easier option is, ironically, internships. However, not so many graduates are willing to work in internships for the belief that they are way past basic training and again .they have had enough of it in the usual industrial attachments, usually in their third year of undergraduate school , and to be honest, internship option to a graduate sounds unreal.

Truth of the matter is, companies and organizations having a small budget, prefer hiring interns. Internships have their advantages all the same, they give the intern a chance to prove and enhance their skills making them stand a better chance when applying for an actual job than a candidate with no experience at all. Secondly, some companies retain interns who prove their skills for the job by offering them a permanent job in the same or even higher field within the company.

Finally, another solution that is more attainable is “settling.” Settling is accepting a job you might not like, a job that is not exactly in your field. One thing you will agree with me when it comes to this option, one is likely to feel wasted, confused and even bitter with the turn of events. This is the time you start questioning your academic qualifications, questioning your self-worth in the job market and even terming your education as a huge waste of time and money…and especially money.

You even start wishing you used the crazily huge amounts of money spent on your education by gambling, maybe that way you might have become an instant millionaire without much struggle.

All this is understandable; in fact almost all of us have gone through this phase of frustration. If you happen to be in this situation, consider taking up that receptionist opportunity you turned down simply because you didn’t pursue a degree in BCOM to sit behind a desk by the door waiting to handle all sorts of enquiries.

It is better to be in that job than none at all, though easier said than done, you will still have to prove yourself. At the same time, settling does not apply where you are not happy with the job at all. This compromise is by no means giving up, it is merely accepting to work in a company all the while searching for something better elsewhere. It is definitely better than having a gap on your CV.

It is also, a great way to make new contacts and learn about something new. So for the disappointed graduate who just read through this, pick at least one option, life is hard I agree, but it becomes harder if no solutions are offered.

Someone forwarded me this and i thought it was good sharing. You might have read it elsewhere but there is a career/jobs angle to it.

Why the job was not done.
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

You’ve probably see this one before, but behind the play on words, there is some great career advice. This email reminded me once again of the importance of taking personal responsibility for your career success.

If you want to create the life and career success you want, don’t be like Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. Be true to yourself. Take responsibility for your life and career success. Don’t let Everybody, Somebody, Anybody or Nobody stop you from doing what you need to do to create the life and career success you want and deserve.

Take personal responsibility for defining what life and career success means to you. Take personal responsibility for building your self confidence. Take personal responsibility for developing the career success competencies you need to succeed. Take personal responsibility for building and nurturing relationships that will help you create your career success.

But as a saying goes, “Knowing is not enough. you need to act on it to be a successful person.”

Committing to taking personal responsibility for your life and career success involves action. You have to do the work if you want the career success.

I know that action can be scary. When you act, you run the risk of failing. But here is another saying, “Procrastination is the physical manifestation of fear and is a confidence killer. Act; especially when you’re afraid.”

Action is great career advice, and it gets at the heart of the little message at the beginning of this post. Everybody, Somebody and Anybody could have acted and got the job done. Nobody did. Don’t be a nobody. Do what you need to do to create the life and career success you want and deserve.

The common sense career success point here is simple. Successful people take personal responsibility for their life and career success. They don’t procrastinate. They act. They set high goals and then do whatever it takes to achieve them. Take responsibility for your life and career success. As the story of Everybody, Somebody, anybody and nobody points out, you have to act. Do what you need to do to become the career success you want to be and deserve to be.

That’s my take on the story of Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. What’s yours? What will you do to make sure you are not a nobody?

Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts with us in a comment. As always, thanks for reading.

To succeed in today’s demanding and ever-changing work environment, you must take charge of managing your own career.

Look upon yourself as a company with a product or service to sell. Understand your market and devise a marketing campaign, remembering that Kenyan companies hire employees who offer them the best results and the best value for money.

Begin by identifying your skills, qualifications, and accomplishments. Adopt a customer-focused approach. What benefits and results can you offer employers? Are your skills marketable and up-to-date?

Employers are in the market for team-players and problem-solvers. They want to see evidence in your CV or resume of specific, quantifiable accomplishments.

Determine what additional skills you need to develop to make yourself more marketable. Take advantage of all opportunities for continuous learning and professional development.

Successful businesses win customers by developing a unique selling proposition. To give yourself a competitive advantage, analyze what other employees in your field are offering.

It is not enough to emulate them; you must strive to differentiate yourself by offering something extra, something unique.

Try to assess yourself as objectively as possible in order to identify your marketable features. Analyze your performance appraisals and, if possible, enlist the help of a trusted friend or colleague to help you evaluate yourself.

Define and priorities your short-term and long-term career goals.

Study recruitment websites and the appointments pages of newspapers to familiarize yourself with the current requirements of employers.

Your CV/resume should be fine-tuned regularly and kept up-to-date to enable you to make a swift and targeted response to any suitable job opportunity that arises.

Learn all you can about job search strategies, job-specific CV, and professional interview techniques.

By adopting a planned and proactive approach, you will maximize your chances of landing the job that best fits your skills and personality, and increase the likelihood of achieving your long-term career goals.

Have a great start this new week.
