Job Title: ILRI Consultancy - Drafting concept notes on Youth in Livestock / Agriculture
 

Location: Home based, with possible travel to Kenya

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a consultant to prepare two concept notes (based on existing information listed below) on youth and livestock / agriculture.

ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. 

The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals’ alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.

 

ILRI is a not-for-profit institution with a staff of about 700 and in 2016, an operating budget of about USD83 million. ILRI is a CGIAR research centre, working for a food-secure future. 

ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa and in South, Southeast and East Asia.

The Position: The consultant is to prepare two concept notes (based on existing information listed below) on youth and livestock / agriculture.

With growing numbers of youth around the world and a strong focus on finding opportunities for their engagement and employment, ILRI is committed to finding ways to approach the topic and planning appropriate activities, especially through CGIAR’s second generation of research programs.  

We propose two distinct (yet related) initiatives:

• An agriculture (CGIAR-wide) initiativetargeted at youth in high school age: The overall objective of the High School Youth Initiative is to expose this specific group to agriculture and livestock as a possible profession of choice by providing them with the necessary information and giving them the opportunity to get an insight into the sector.   Initially focused on Kenya, but should be possible to customize for other countries as well.

• A livestock-focused initiative targeted at youth aged 18-30: The overall objective of the Youth Initiative is to increase young men and women’s participation and engagement in agriculture, livestock and selected value chains in East Africa, by shifting the current perspective the youth has of the sector, collaborate with other stakeholders in modernizing it, and supporting all interested youth in addressing the subjects of unemployment and agricultural entrepreneurship.

Qualifications of the Consultant

The following qualification and experience are required for the assignment:

• Excellent communication and writing skills in English.


• Experience preparing concept note for large bilateral donors


• Experience with youth and agriculture initiatives


• An understanding of ILRI and CGIAR


• Good presentation skills

Process and Duration:

The consultant would not need to start from scratch, as they will be provided with existing materials to work from, including:

• Draft concept notes for both initiatives


• A literature review of youth and livestock


• A compilation of similar ‘youth’ initiatives

Based on the materials above, we expect the consultant to prepare the concept notes, in a format suitable to a large donor.  We expect this assignment to take around 4 working days per brief.

Deliverables: We expect the consultant to prepare the concept notes, in a professional format suitable to a large bilateral donor. 

Fee: The consultant will propose an all-inclusive fee for the work.
