The Kenya Section of The International Commission of Jurists


Established in 1959, the Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Kenya) is a non–partisan, nongovernmental organization with a membership drawn from the Bar and Bench.


The primary mission of the organization is to promote and protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law nationally and regionally.


ICJ Kenya has distinguished itself with its consistent track record of well-informed advocacy and leadership and is today widely acknowledged as a premier human rights organization in Kenya and around Africa.


ICJ Kenya seeks to fill the vacancy as detailed below and invites suitably qualified Kenyans to apply.
 


Position: Executive Director (ED)


Overall Purpose of the Job: This is a leadership role and the holder should possess leadership, and technical qualifications, and must be able to play a supervisory role leading a team of highly qualified professional and support staff.


A commitment to the improvement, and understanding, of the human rights and governance situation in Kenya and around Africa is also a prerequisite.


The successful candidate will be the focal person in ICJ Kenya’s leadership and will be responsible for providing strategic direction and maintaining key external relationships



Position Objectives


The ED will take overall responsibility of the implementation of the organization’s mandate and its Strategic Plan and ensure a strong brand and profile of ICJ Kenya is maintained and the organization remains credible.

The ED will lead a team of professional and support staff at the ICJ Kenya and oversee the coordination of programme activities for growth and the achievement of the desired results and impact.

The ED will spearhead innovative resource mobilization strategies and activities that will be geared towards diversifying and deepening ICJ Kenya’s donor base.

The ED will participate in the representation of ICJ Kenya in its relations with the government, international agencies, donors, other NGOs and the general public.

The ED will ensure all legal obligations of ICJ Kenya and other partners are fulfilled.

The ED will initiate policy proposals for consideration by Council.

The ED shall be responsible for the execution of ICJ Kenya’s policies, procedures and internal controls and support compliance with donor procedures and requirements.

The ED will provide leadership to ICJ Kenya in establishing and maintaining proper institutional communication procedures.

The ED will development and maintain relationships with partners and represent ICJ Kenya in engagements with the government, donors, partners and the general public and ensure that ICJ Kenya is compliant in the context of government, donors and the general public.

The ED will promote activities that will engage the membership of ICJ Kenya.

The ED will act as the Secretary to the Council of ICJ Kenya. The ED will act as the official spokesman and PR person of ICJ Kenya and undertake other additional tasks as may be assigned by Council. ((This role is also performed by the Chairperson, Council generally).


Qualifications


The ideal candidate should possess a Master’s degree in Law, Management of NGOs or Leadership.

A Bachelor degree in Law, and at least 10 years working experience,


Relevant Skills


The candidate must be proactive and possess the skills to lead and motivate a team of professional and support staff to perform and achieve the desired results.

The candidate must have prior experience in recourse mobilization, financial management, implementation and reporting of projects.

In addition, the candidate must possess a deep understanding of the governance context and human rights situation in Kenya and around Africa;

Previous administrative experience is desirable and experiences in project writing and good writing skills will be crucial;

The candidate must have the ability to represent ICJ Kenya in a variety of situations from the grassroots to high levels and must possess good diplomatic skills;

Competence in the use of ICTs is also desirable for the position.
