Summary One of the core areas where World Vision focuses on is responding to emergencies as soon as they occur. It is an emerging reality that on a global dimension, disasters and humanitarian emergencies are increasing in magnitude and complexity. This presents a major challenge to NGOs that respond to these emergencies.

The World Vision East Africa Regional office comprises of operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Burundi, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan. WASH is one of the most vibrant sectors where World Vision supports, with over 20 WASH practitioners spread across the national offices.

East Africa Region is equally characterized by outbreaks of emergencies ranging from floods, landslides, droughts, famine, AWDs, civil strife, etc that lead to massive loss of life, separation of families, displacement of people and destruction of livelihoods, homes and national infrastructure. The fragile nature of this working context demands that adequate knowledge and capacity is established and continuously strengthened to ensure speedy delivery of the necessary humanitarian aid to the disaster affected population.

WASH has always emerged as one of the most critical sectors that need immediate attention during first phase emergency responses. It is upon this background that Program staff need to be well equipped with the necessary skills and basic principles to enable them respond to these emergencies with the speed and quality which is desired.

Training Objective WVI is reaching out to an institution/consultant to support a five-day training course on WASH in Emergencies to:

1. Give WASH staff a broader understanding of humanitarian reform


2. Introduce the Staff to WASH best practices in emergencies


3. To increase the WASH Sector Capacity in responding to humanitarian emergencies

Detailed Scope The scope of this work is to provide training on WASH in Emergencies to WVI officers. This will include but not be limited to:  Objectives of needs assessments  WASH roles in an emergency response context  Environment assessments for implementing WASH  Water quality tests and treatment techniques  WASH and the community: tools for communication and engagement  Sanitation and excreta disposal  Borehole Systems in emergencies
