The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water,sanitation and hygiene sectors.
The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 4000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters -NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs
The NRC in Kenya has its country office in Nairobi and has refugees and IDP operations in Dadaab, Kakuma and Mandera respectively

The Area Manager is responsible for providing overall leadership to the 2 operational areas of Dadaab and Mandera, North Eastern part of Kenya and is a member of the Country Management Group. The post is based in Dadaab with frequent travels to Mandera. The Area manager will report to the Country Director.

Job description
- Overall management of the Core Competencies activities, field offices and staff within the specific area, including the Area Management Team (AMT)
- Development and execution of the strategy for the area
- Adherence to NRC policies and donor requirements
- Emergency response capacity in the area
- Safety and security of staff
- Area level advocacy
- External representation, coordination and relationship building
- Responsible for shared resource allocation
- Implementation of policies and procedures
- Learning, training and development of staff
- Ensuring right-size of support structure of Dadaab and Mandera to support programmes.
- Ensuring effective budget management and financial control.
- Ensuring monitoring and evaluation of all projects
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Management and any other related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience from working as a Senior Manager in a humanitarian/recovery context
- Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
- Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
- Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile
- Fluency in English, both written and verbal
- Valid driver’s license

Personal qualities
- Knowledge of the context in North-Eastern Kenya
- Knowledge of Kiswahili an advantage
- Managing change and restructuring
- Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts. Political and cultural awareness and experience of working where insecurity is a major issue
- Ability to work independently in a result oriented multi-tasking and multi-cultural environment and manage conflicting priorities

- Contract period is up to December 2016 with possibility of extension. Salary/benefits: According to NRC’s general directions, The candidate will observe NRC’s code of conduct and working hours for the NRC Office in Dadaab & Mandera.
