Danish Red Cross (DRC) is an active partner in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement (RCRC), which has as its aim to alleviate human suffering among vulnerable people all over the world. In close cooperation with our Movement partners Somalia Red Crescent (SRCS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), you will help ensure that wounded and acute sick persons in Somalia receive timely, humane and effective First Aid by skilled First responders during emergencies. It is a difficult mission with travel to sensitive and insecure areas in Somalia. Your base will be in Nairobi, Kenya.
Tasks
Your principal role will be to support SRCS in developing its First Aid activities.
Your overall tasks will be to:
- facilitate the roll-out of a first aid project in 3 to 4 pilot branches across Somalia;
- draw lessons from these pilots to validate the First Aid and Dead Body Management (DBM) reference documents; and
- roll-out the first aid programme to 3 more branches in 2015 where possible (still to be selected) with the support of the SRCS First Aid Technical Working Group.
Detailed tasks include:
- Assist SRCS to define a comprehensive package of references for First Aid activities during conflict emergencies.
- Finalise with SRCS, the scope of SRCS’s activity for management of the dead and its application into the ‘SRCS First Aid & Management of Dead Bodies Capacities’ Strategy.
- Work with key SRCS staff and volunteers (the First Aid Technical Working Group) tasked with reviewing the pilot phase projects and contribute to its further development before roll-out to other identified branches.
- Consider the locations and amounts of First Aid and DBM stock to be strategically positioned throughout Somalia.
- Ensure First Aid response activities link with existing and future emergency preparedness and response activities as well as other initiatives related to volunteer management supported by other Movement partners to enhance existing systems.
- Liaise closely with DRC, SRCS and ICRC to ensure inclusion of and synergy between the different capacities of the three partners
Profile
· Experienced in First Aid· Hands-on experience in contexts with limited resources, especially affected by an armed conflict or other emergencies
· Experienced trainer, especially in First Aid and with lay persons, or weapon bearers, or volunteers
· Specific skills and experience in working with National Humanitarian organisations, organizational and strategy development
· Familiar with ICRC priorities, approaches and procedures as a field health delegate, is an asset

The variety and the challenging characteristics of the emergencies in sensitive or insecure contexts require the First Responders to be confident, skilled and creative/ innovative in the ways and means they will assist the casualties in a timely, humane and effective manner. Accordingly, the support given to these First Responders is practical, realistic and pragmatic. It is adapted to the needs and expectations people have, the context where they live, the resources they have, and the health care system that can be weak and/or hard to access to.
We offer
The position is for 9 months and is a 37 hours a week employment and classified as a non-family position with date of commencement as soon as possible. Your base will be at the ICRC /SRCS delegation in Nairobi, Kenya, with frequent travels to Somalia, both to Somaliland, Puntland and South Central Zone where and when the security situation allows. Your will report to the DRC Head of Region but on a daily basis be under the coordination of the ICRC Nairobi Delegation Health Coordinator. The salary including all allowances and pension will be between DKK 40,400 – 42,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
The RCRC working environment in Nairobi has a dynamic atmosphere, and for the right candidate the position holds significant opportunities for professional and personal development in a, at times, challenging Somali working context.
