“I have worked so many unrelated jobs. As an Accountant I have worked as a Sales Assistant and a receptionist. I feel this unrelated experience is not necessary to include in my CV yet I have learnt a great deal from them. How do I include this unrelated experience in my CV?” Asks Catherine Kamau in an email.
The Question: How do you include unrelated experience on your CV?
The Answer
A large number of people have a form experience that does not fit neatly with our current goals and career paths. But there is always a way to include it in your CV.
“Any experience gained counts as a valuable experience. It might not be related, but it gives you transferable skills. If the experience is worth it and would be evidence that you bring something valuable to the table of your next employer, include it,” says Florence Mukunya a CV Writer at Corporate Staffing Services.
How to include unrelated experience in your CV
“Use the phrase ‘additional Experience. Under that sum up that experience in one sentence per experience, for example: “Accounts Assistant, ABC Company 2010-2011” Ms. Mukunya adds.
In all the unrelated jobs you have held, what is common and what did you gain from the experiences? This can be used in your summary. For example, “working as a Sales person at XXX Company and my current receptionist job has given me a chance to hone my communication skills and team work skills which are important in any job.”
“Do not dismiss your experience. It can be used as a selling point during an interview. Besides, All that experience is what made you the worthy candidate you are today,” Ms. Mukunya concludes.
