Job Title: Business Development Officer
Hours: Full time, 40 hours per week
About Tegemeo Institute, an Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development, in Research and Extension Division of Egerton University
Tegemeo is Kenya’s leading agricultural policy research institute and one of the leading research institutes in East Africa. It has a long track record designing and conducting policy research and evaluation for local and international partners. Tegemeo wishes to strengthen its capacities in MLE to enable it to play a greater role in the execution of development strategies in the agricultural sector. The long-term goal is for Tegemeo Institute to leverage its local position, credibility and expertise to create a strong, sustainable regional network in MLE.

Background: Tegemeo received a grant to strengthen the Institute’s capacity to provide Measurement Learning and Evaluation (MLE) services to agricultural development projects and programmes in East Africa, and to support its development into an important regional hub for MLE within the Agricultural Learning and Impacts Network (ALINe) initiative. The support will also help Tegemeo achieve its goal of becoming a world-class research institute that can play a long-term regional role in agricultural policy research, monitoring and evaluation, including the capacity to mentor other evaluation Institutions/Firms in the region. The grant supports three areas: 1) strengthening staff and capabilities; 2) investing in technology and innovation; and 3) developing partnerships and networks in the East African MLE community.
 Position Summary: Tegemeo Institute seeks a Business Development Officer for its MLE unit. The position serves in both advisory and execution tasks. Specifically, he/she will participate in developing an MLE business model to grow the Institute to become the MLE service provider of choice for agricultural development agencies in the region. He/she will support growth in MLE business by developing: an institutional framework for building of strategic partnerships; a pricing model that not only ensures profitability of MLE business but also the Institute’s competitiveness; and proposing and implementing a staffing model for the MLE unit which ensures MLE Unit has adequate capability for various MLE assignments.
The business advisor will work in a small team but will be able to draw resources and expertise from the procurement and finance team at the Institute as well as from strategic partners and consultants.

Educational Qualifications

Advanced degree in business/strategic managementDeep understanding of development issues in business development in SSA, particularly in a technical area such as MLEA good level of appreciation of social research and methods, both quantitativeExcellent writing and communication skillsSkills in proposal writing including budgetingExperience in writing winning proposals in development5 year experience in business development of which at least 2 years of work experience has been in sub-Saharan AfricaTeam player and ability to cultivate a good working relationship with research team at the InstituteGood networks in the area of business development – for sourcing expertise & technologyAn offer of employment will be subject to the receipt of satisfactory references. We require three references, one of which must be from you present or most recent employer. The Institute reserves the right to contact your previous employer before an offer is made. Unless your permission is granted, your present employer will not be approached until after an offer of employment has been made.Probationary Period: The first 3 months of your employment with the Institute will be counted as a probationary period. During this time the Institute will make an assessment of your suitability for acceptance to a permanent position.
Hours of Work: This post is full time, 40 hours per week.
 Holidays: The annual leave entitlement is 30 days
 During your probationary service the period of notice to terminate your employment is 1 month.Following successful completion of your probationary period, the notice period you are required to give the Institute becomes 3 months.Duration: This is a national position for 24 months with possibilities of renewal for a further period upon satisfactory performance and if project is extended.
Salary: The position with be competitively remunerated including benefits such as medical insurance and other allowances.
Location
: The position will based in Nairobi, Kenya but will involve extensive travel to focal countries of donor agents as well as project locations.

1. Senior Research Fellow (One Position)
Reporting to the Director of the Institute, the Senior Research Fellow will be responsible for the continuous development and advocacy of efficient and effective policies in the agricultural sector. The successful candidate will be expected to identify and prioritize policy research issues, implement broad research programs to answer priority questions and ensure timely dissemination and advocacy of findings and related impact on the agricultural sector.
 
The preferred candidate should have the following:A PhD in Agricultural Economics or related field from a recognized UniversityAt least five (5) years relevant experience in agricultural policy research and advocacyRecord of peer reviewed publicationsAbility to develop successful long term proposals and grantsUnderstanding of, and previous experience and participation in policy formulation and advocacyExtensive knowledge of and practical skills in quantitative methodsExperience in and ability to network and create partnerships for policy research and advocacy2. Research Fellows (Three Positions)
Reporting to Senior Researchers at the Institute, the Research Fellow will be responsible for the development and dissemination of agricultural policy information and data. The successful candidate will be expected to design relevant policy research projects, collect data, undertake data analysis and write research reports and policy briefs. The work will also entail considerable outreach and advocacy activities with key stakeholders in the Agricultural and Rural Development Sector.The preferred candidate should have the following:A PhD or Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics or related field from a recognized institutionAt least three (3) years relevant experience in agricultural policy research and analysisGood knowledge of and practical skills in applying statistical analysis, econometric and quantitative methodsProven ability to conduct research independently and produce high quality reports and publicationsCompetence in statistical software such as SPSS and STATAKnowledge and experience in design and implementation of household surveys, and analysis of household level dataA competitive remuneration package will be offered to the successful candidate(s). Each position carries with it a two (2) year renewable contract.

* Build capacity for researchers at the Institute on climate change and related concepts such as vulnerability and risk assessment, adaptation & mitigation measures, and climate change modeling
* Backstop activities to be implemented under the climate change research, which includes providing support in the development of tools and methods in analyzing risk and vulnerability to climate change, impacts of climate change as well as adaptation and mitigation responses to climate change
* Actively facilitate networking, sharing and managing of information with national policy makers and other stakeholders in the climate change arena
* Facilitate relevant collaborative policy formulation and communication strategy

Qualifications and skills

* Hold a PhD in environmental policy management/environmental sciences, natural resources management or a related field.
* Applicants with MSc. in environmental policy management/ environmental sciences, natural resources management or a related field will also be considered
* For applicants with a PhD, a minimum of 3 years research work experience is required with at least 2 years research experience on climate change.
* MSc. applicants should have a minimum of 6 years research work experience with at least 3 years experience on climate change research
* The applicant should have a sound scientific background in climate change research.
* He/she should demonstrate the ability to master complex scientific issues and a broad understanding of various aspects of climate change and related environmental issues
* Research experience in Africa and an understanding of the impacts of climate change on agriculture and rural livelihood are required
* Experience in carrying out rigorous modeling using climate data and proven record to produce high quality reports and publications is required
* The applicant should have the ability to engage with policy makers and other stakeholders at the national level, and also be able to train and mentor others
* Experience working with quantitative packages and panel data is an added advantage

A competitive remuneration package will be offered to the successful candidate.
