Can someone please explain what is happening in the banking sector?

Why are Kenyan banks outdoing each other in firing  managers and senior staff?

Consider these bad news in the last six months.

1.Barclays Bank Kenya retrenches two hundred managers (I understand the bank surprised the staff with dismissal letters one Friday morning).
2.Equity banks fires a whole department.
3.Kenya Commercial Bank sacks senior managers, and now
4.Co-op Bank retires 34 senior managers in cost cutting plan ( check Business Daily)

Working in a senior post in a bank must be one of the riskiest jobs in Kenya.

I don’t work in a bank, but by the nature of my job, I deal with bankers. It’s a pity to hear that two of the bankers I work with are now gone with the wind. Both are from Co-op Bank and I wonder what criteria they used that affected these ladies.

These were people I spoke with a couple of weeks ago and we even had ongoing transactions.

I even attentioned her in my last letter to the bank, only to be told she had been sacked and a new officer introduced to me. Very active and passionate about their job. They have been in the system for over 6 years.

I was shocked to hear their sack last week.

Well this shows that anything can happen at any time and whats needed in Kenya is for someone to be skilled in one job, work or the other.

Another simple lesson to learn from all these bank retrenchment is to learn how to save for the rainy days.

Sincerely, most Kenyan bankers cant find jobs away from the banking sector because majority of them cant fit into other sectors of the economy.

The job experience gained at the bank level is not easily ‘transferable’

I just want to express my sympathy for those sacked in those banks and to warn the rest of us!!

By Speider Schneider From Ask-men.com

As far as we have come in equality of the sexes, it is still almost impossible for men and women to work together. Case in point: I recently met a newly jobless friend for lunch to cheer him up and relay some stories that would make his dismissal from his current position a bit more hopeful.

He is a very sharp creative type with an eye toward the future and pushing the envelope. He is hardworking and a no-nonsense guy. He was doomed from the start. We sat down, and he told me the problems he faced.

So It’s Not Just Me

“I just rubbed some of the people who have been there so long the wrong way.” He is very humble, and I knew the entire reason needed to be pulled out of him.

“Some people found you curt or you didn’t involve them enough in decisions?” I asked, having worked with him and seen the internal politics just enough to see the red flags. “It was a female boss, right?”

He looked a bit stunned, but the problem was the distance between Mars and Venus. I relayed stories of a female manager who would call people into her office and trump up something so they would break down and cry so that she would comfort them and tell them everything was all right. Sick! She tried with me a couple of times, but I would argue her points until they were transparent. I think when I left her office, she would cry. Men do this, too. So we share a cruel streak, but I doubt that’s a mutual building block.

What this manager was doing was caring for people. She didn’t see what she was doing as cruel. She was filling people with emotion, dropping them down and picking them up so she would be seen as the confident and nurturing female boss. She was just mental about it!

My friend and I traded more stories and started coming down hard on some of our former female bosses. I had also been totally destroyed by a female manager. She made it her business to see me gone. It was a sharp contrast to the beginning years of our work together. She assigned me special projects and encouraged my future climb up the corporate ladder. Then it all changed in what seemed to be a day.

“She was in love with you,” said a female friend, to whom I related the same story while we had a lunch far enough from the office not to be seen. I was dumbfounded. Except for the jokes around the office, I had no idea she liked me like that.

“When did it change?” she asked.

She overheard me talking about how a woman I liked in another department had put on a lot of weight, and she went off on how she knew what I ‘really thought’ and how I was a ‘typical man,’ and that’s when I started noticing being moved to the D-list.”

My friend, who is one of the sweetest and most intelligent people I know, kept eating her salad and started to explain it to me. “She replaced the intensity of her love for you with hate.”

She kept eating and smiling as if it happens every day. Apparently it does, and what was so easy for a woman to see, I wouldn’t notice if you tied it to a brick and smashed it over my head. I’m a man. I don’t think that way.

My male friend who had met the same fate didn’t spot it as my female friend did. Men aren’t wired the same way women are. Do I even have to mention that?

Are Female Bosses Worse Than Male Ones?

Anyone who comments that male bosses never cross the line with sexual harassment and bullying female employees is either sense impaired or lying. Male bosses love having power over others, and they exercise it as often as possible. But so do female bosses. Having given two weeks’ notice to the small firm where my female boss was abusing me on a daily basis, the very next day I was called into her office where one of the nice female partners fired me while my wannabe-lover stood smiling with her arms crossed. I said, “OK, but don’t you want me to train my replacement?”

“You can go!” said my love-muffin boss as she laughed.

Not just fired but destroyed, in her eyes. I got six months of unemployment because, despite my two-weeks’ notice, I was fired within that time. Men just fire me and try to make it sound as if it’s nobody’s fault. Women, well…

Oct 26, 2010

We all know about the Kirima family. Though the saga has cooled off it was not a good sight all. But that is family for you. Unlike friends, you can only work with what ‘God’ has given you.

On another note, have you ever wondered how it is to work in a family run business like the one for Kirima? To be caught in the cross fire when things are not working? Many of us start our careers in small or medium sized firms mostly owned and run by the family.

I went out and interviewed a good friend who has worked in such a situation and this was his candid response.

My life working for the family.

I worked for a small family business for about six years. It had many ups and downs, especially when I was trying to compete for gratitude, amongst all of the family favoritism!

It was a Father-Daughter-Son operation, with about ten additional employees. The Son’s name sat proudly over the entrance to the business, but he was NOT a part of it! This left the Father and the Daughter, fighting in the wings, over the direction and the future of their concern.

The Son drew a substantial salary from the company, while he operated his own business in another part of the city. The Family business was quite small and the draw on funds, gave the Family Members, precedence over the non-family’ employees.

I was struggling with a low pay and two young children at the time, so I worked extra hard, as Manager, to keep my position and satisfy all; with this knowledge in hand, I was in fact, taken much advantage of!
I found that I had to reinvent my duties, so that I could be respected.

It did, however come naturally to me, as my survival depended on it! I had to make sure that I became irreplaceable, but it was difficult to do.

For some reason, the Father thought that he knew best and the Daughter thought the same! When ever anything went wrong, they would first, look to each other and if the blame could not be found there, they would look to me.

It was difficult for me to show them that everything was running smoothly, however, I learned, that they just wanted more profits to fuel their needs.

So I increased their sales and got them new customers. I even got back some of the customers that they had lost over the years. One day, I became very ill and could not go to work. They were not concerned with my well being and the fact that I had become the backbone of their company, was completely over their heads!

With all of their internal quarreling, they had grown oblivious to the fact that without me there, things would not run smoothly; Instead of showing me concern, they were very rude and thought that what ever I did for them, was neither here nor there; They thought that they could do it better themselves!

After three days of my absence, they started to realize that things were not going smoothly and they would call me regularly, for advice. Not only was I responsible for purchasing and management, I was also responsible for over half of their sales!

When I returned, after over a week, they told me that they could not believe how much business I generated for them and they praised me for all of my hard work! I received an absent King’s welcome!

Finally, I gained respect and was not taken for granted! I asked for a raise and I got it! Even though I was not family, in the future, I was treated almost like their absent son.

There you have it.

Have you ever worked for a family owned biashara and how was it?
