University Education In Kenya.
New universities in Kenya will not be established unless they meet required standards.
“We have the mandate to ensure there are no fake universities mushrooming in the country,” Higher Education assistant minister in Kenya Asman Kamama said on Tuesday.
He said allowing the establishment of universities in Kenya before they met the requisite standards would amount to comprising the country’s education standards.
Mr Kamama explained that the Commission for Higher Education had valid reasons for turning down applications to set up a number of institutions and closing down others.
He was responding to a question in Parliament by Yatta MP Charles Kilonzo who claimed the commission was frustrating investors by refusing to approve applications to set up universities in Kenya.
Mr Kilonzo sought to know the length of time it takes to establish a university here in Kenya and asked for a list of pending applications and reasons why they had been denied approval.
The assistant minister said the commission operated within laid down rules that guide the process of establishing universities.
