CBM is an International Christian disability and inclusive development organization whose primary purpose is to improve quality of life of the world’s poorest persons with disabilities and those at risk of disability, who live in the most disadvantaged societies.
We are looking to recruit an Advocacy and Programmes Officer for our Nairobi Office. Persons with Disabilities are encouraged to apply
Purpose
To play a key role in the development and implementation of CBM Kenya’s Advocacy and Programme agenda and activities in order to raise the profile of the organisation and to aid in the mainstreaming of disability issues.
Advocacy & Programs Officer Specific Tasks
Advocacy and Programming
Liaising closely with CBMs Regional office in the delivery of the advocacy strategy; participate in conference calls, provide regular updates to staff, and tailor briefing materials to the CBM context.
Representing CBM Kenya at lobbying/consultation meetings/conferences within political, government as well as Disability Civil Society Sector circles.
Participating in relevant CBM and external policy and working groups when required.
Supporting the design, planning and delivery of relevant CBM policy and advocacy events.
Support the production of policy briefings and other materials for use in various communications channels and at external events as directed.
Assist with the monitoring and evaluation of the impact of CBM Kenya’s policy and advocacy work and deliver regular analysis and updates for management and staff as required.
Provide relevant content for key communications and publicity material including website and annual report.
Create and maintain internal systems, including contact lists, diaries of upcoming events and opportunities and other relevant databases.
Write and send press releases, write seminar reports and undertake background research on the topics of seminars.
Produce timely materials for advocacy, communications and media purposes on CBM Kenya priorities through country visits and desk based research, including drafting or inputting into reports, briefing papers, submissions to government consultations and web content.
Produce detailed annual action plans on specific areas of responsibility outlined and agreed upon, identifying areas for growth and development and outlining measurable objectives.
Objectively review the success and achievements against agreed targets, identifying strengths, weaknesses and areas for development.
Participate in the day to day work of the organisation – such as reporting, attending team and Board meetings as required, and taking a flexible approach to general administrative and support tasks.
Volunteers
Advertise and recruit volunteers as required to support the functions of the advocacy team.
Carry out volunteer inductions.
Manage and supervise volunteers.
Personal Specification for the NGO Kenyan Job
Experience
At least 5 years’ experience in the area of advocacy, preferably in the area of Disability Inclusion
A proven track record of inputting into and delivering on successful policy & advocacy strategies within the development sector
Experience of lobbying within political and government sectors. Experience in the Disability sector would be an added advantage
Experience of producing policy materials for varied audiences.
Knowledge of key national, regional and international institutions relevant to delivery of new policy.
Skills and Competencies
Minimum – Bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Business or related
Excellent communications (oral & written English), presentation, interpersonal, influencing and negotiating skills for engaging with a wide variety of contacts/ audiences.
Ability to communicate complex messages in an accessible manner for varied audiences.
Good conceptual and analytical skills and ability to think and operate innovatively and independently.
Good administration and organisational skills and ability to optimise independent use of time against variable workload and prioritize own workload with minimum supervision.
Ability to manage resources optimally as well as understand and generate budgets.
Ability to work well with others and to be a team player
High standard of applied computer literacy (Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook and the Internet).
Demonstrable ability to plan and prioritize own workload with minimum supervision.
Ability to demonstrate initiative and work well under pressure.
Ability to plan ahead and work within agreed timeframes
Ability and willingness to travel for work
Willingness to put in additional work hours as and when situations warrant
Willingness to adhere to and sign the CBM Code of Conduct to Protect Children and Vulnerable Persons and other required CBM policy documentation
