5 Ways To Deal With A Mean HR

By Sera Kazungu

“The HR at my job is very mean. I used to think it was just me, but after doing some research,I discovered that she does that to everyone else. No one here likes her. We have been secretly praying that she gets a job elsewhere. Recently, she took my notes from a meeting and hid them. Got into trouble when my boss requested to see the notes and I had nothing to show. How do I go about dealing with this situation?” Asks Adams Kiprono via email.

You may find yourself in such a predicament at your workplace. How do you deal professionally with such a situation without getting yourself in trouble with your superiors?

Below is how well to handle such a situation when and if it occurs.

Ways to deal with a mean HR

1. You need to control yourself
It does not matter how angry you feel at that moment. Ensure that you do not say things that will make it easy for the HR to fire you. Keep your cool.
It is okay for you to step out if you feel like you need a minute to pull yourself together. Walk away and re-group in order to ensure that you have a straight head and that you are thinking clearly.

2. Document each behavior
Keeping a list of everything that your HR does to you will give you proof for a time when you finally decide to take action against them. It would be wise to keep your list as updated as possible in order to make it credible.
Make sure that you do not share this list with anyone else as it may land you in a world of trouble if the HR discovers that you are keeping tabs on them

3. Speak with the HR and politely ask them to clarify what they expect of you
You have to be open to the idea that you could be the one with the problem. Perhaps you are not doing what is expected of you. To rule out this possibility, politely talk to the HR and have them explain what their expectations are.
It may sound unreal, but take notes. This will show your genuine interest in knowing your shortcomings and your willingness to be corrected. It will score you points.

4. Keep your distance
In a case where you can, stay as far away from that person as possible. This will help you avoid unnecessary confrontations. Do your best to have as little contact as possible with them.

The truth is that there will always be people who you do not get along with. What will show your maturity is how you deal with it.
