POSITION OVERVIEW



RefuSHE/Heshima Kenya is a non-profit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya and dedicated to identifying, protecting, and empowering unaccompanied refugee children and youth, especially adolescent girls, through our specialized shelter, education, and advocacy programs.The House Mother/Matron will be based at the Safe house and will be responsible for taking care of the beneficiaries, ensuring that their safety, health and well being is observed, and will liaise with the rest of the Safe House staff in ensuring that beneficiaries" needs are addressed in a timely fashion.



KEY ROLES



· Takes care of the younger beneficiaries in maintaining hygiene and general care



· Supports the case workers from time to time to accompany the Persons of Concern to appointments



· Trains beneficiaries/young mothers on parenting skills, etc



· Undertakes the allocation of duties for the safe house residents



· Takes charge of the safe house on the night shift and ensures that beneficiaries always have access to any personal effects as they require



· Issues supplies to the safe house residents



· Maintains residents daily log



· Fills all exit forms for the beneficiaries and ensures that comprehensive records of the same are well maintained



· Supervises the beneficiaries’ activities in the Safe House and supports the rest of the staff in enhancing the health and safety of the persons of concern.



· Assists in the inculcation of good manners and courtesy among the beneficiaries.



· Responsible for reporting repairs in the Safe House as required for maintenance to the Safe House & Case Management Coordinator for action.



· Makes sure that when not in use, classes and other areas are locked on time



· Maintains close liaison with the Associate Director – SH at all times concerning issues touching on beneficiaries.



Qualities & Experience



· A minimum of 2 years’ experience in working with children /minors.



· Warm, caring, sympathetic and nurturing nature



· Excellent communication and listening skills



· A team player



· Discreet and ability to adhere to confidentiality



· Responsive to the needs of children/minors



Qualifications



· A sound knowledge of First Aid



· Minimum Diploma in Childhood Care, or Nursing Diploma.



· Be registered with the Nursing Council and possess a current license.

Who We Are:


The hospital was started in 1909 by the Church of Scotland. It is owned and governed by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. It is located in the Central Highlands of Kenya between the Aberdares Range and Mount Kenya 130 Km (80 Miles) North of Nairobi at an altitude of 5,900ft. It is a 203-bed hospital and provides holistic health care. Though located in a Kikuyu speaking people, the language of work is English and Swahili since not all staff are Kikuyu and from time to time it receives visitors from overseas. Medical students from abroad get their medical electives at the Hospital.


It provides general health care in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology as well as outpatient services.


The hospital has a Nursing School which is training Kenya Registered Community Health Nurses. Other units are the Guest House and a Cafeteria.


Responsibilities:



  • Manage the OPD / Emergency / Ward and assist the medical doctors

  • Accompany medical doctors/ consultants on IPD Ward rounds

  • In the absence of the Consultant – Pay timely visits to In – patients and treat the patients along the indicated line of treatment

  • Conduct medical procedures under supervision after getting the consent from the medical doctor.

  • Implementation of Quality protocols in patient care

  • Complete and correct documentation of patient files & records

  • Check and authorize all diagnostic requisition slips.

  • Ensure that emergency medicines are available in Pharmacy, ICU and IP Ward.

  • Monitor the Nursing care – Proper Medication, timely vitals recording etc

  • Inspect maintenance of the hospital while on Duty

  • Attend emergencies ensuring that the doctors are informed and proper consultation done for the best outcome.

  • Providing the information regarding the patient’s condition to his/her next of kin as per protocol

  • Check the diet chart, medicine chart, vitals chart frequently

  • Coordinate with all nursing/Paramedical & non-medical staff of the department to maintain a high standard of medical care to the patients.

  • Seek for necessary approval and pre-authorization as per hospital guidelines

  • Involve in cost optimization measures by management

  • Help management in sealing revenue leakages and pilferage

  • Discuss your discrepancies regarding any process gap, immediately with Medical admin and then to Hospital administrator to ensure smooth flow of operations

  • Perform other activities /duties assigned by Clinical officer In charge

  • Carrying out physical disability assessments for categorization, registration, and other support.

  • Providing health promotion and education to patients/clients on neuromusculoskeletal disorders and healthy living to prevent communicable diseases.

  • Maintaining information and records relating to patients.

  • Inducting students on practical training on occupational therapy services.

  • Requisitioning and ensuring availability and proper utilization of physiotherapy supplies and equipment as well as giving support and health education to patients and relatives in hospital.

  • Maintaining equipment and inventory.

  • Analyzing data and preparing reports.

  • Coaching and mentoring of staff.
