GROOTS SACCO is a startup SACCO established in July 2017 for members of GROOTS Kenya. GROOTS Kenya is a national movement of grassroots women across Kenya. Our mission is to facilitate effective engagement of grassroots women in development spaces.


Position Description:


To lead in the implementation of the Markets & Trade Program targeting small-scale women farmers largely in the Horticulture value chain in Nyandarua (Potato), Nakuru (Horticulture & Dairy), Kitui (Poultry & Horticulture) and Muranga (Banana) Counties.


Responsibilities:



  • Lead the mapping and organizing of small-scale farmers into groups

  • Enhance farmers capacities and organization to produce for the market

  • Support in conducting of baselines surveys and rapid value chain analysis

  • Develop & lead the implementation of such innovations that accelerate rural women small-scale farmers’ engagement higher up the value chain

  • Support farmer groups to map strategic agri-markets and build sustainable market linkages

  • Develop and mainstream into the program innovations to address traditional challenges that hinder women engagement in agribusiness e.g- care work burden, gender-based violence, lack of land control, lack of capital e.t.c

  • Support the women farmers to map stakeholders ‘conduct community-led advocacy to compliment the program investments

  • Sustain strategic partnerships with policymakers and stakeholders mapped under the program

  • Support mapped farmers to mobilize own financial resources, save and borrow to support their value chain activities

  • Build a participatory monitoring system for the targeted individual farmers and farmer groups.

  • Build a men for women movement to enhance the quality of program outcomes at individual and group level

  • Any other role assigned by the Executive Director


Qualifications:



  • Bachelors’ degree in agribusiness or agricultural related studies

  • A deep understanding of the horticulture value chain and in particular for crops such as potatoes, banana, and kales

  • At least over 3 years of working experience in the sector

  • Experience working with small-scale farmers/entrepreneurs

The Research and Design Lead, a member of senior management team, will provide technical leadership to formative research activities, refinement of the Theory of Change, and development of a locally adapted programmatic approach to reducing acute malnutrition. S/he will be responsible for ensuring the appropriateness and rigor of research methods, overseeing data collection and analysis, and ensuring research results are useful and applicable for making program design decisions.



Responsibilities




  • Develop methodology and lead rigorous research, analysis and studies

Qualifications




  • Bachelor’s degree in social science discipline, gender studies or relevant filed required; master’s degree preferred

Responsibilities




  • Provide technical leadership in development and application of methods and tools for successful peer-to-peer learning, knowledge sharing and application, evidence and data utilization

  • Provide technical leadership and management in the analyses, development and execution of systems strengthening and capacity building efforts

  • Liaise with a wide range of government ministries, organizations, and local institutions

  • Ensure close consultation and incorporation of ongoing feedback from relevant officials over the life of the program



Qualifications




  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 7 years relevant work experience or a master’s degree and minimum of 5 years relevant experience required

Background:



CRS, with partners Lumos and Maestral International, will work closely with Department of Children Services (DCS) and other care reform actors to implement programming and interventions to support care reform in Kenya. Kenya has been selected as one of three countries, together with the Republic of Moldova and Guatemala, to implement the initial phase of Changing the Way We Care (CTWWC) initiative. CTWWC is an initiative that aims to leverage existing strengths and efforts of key stakeholders as well as address identified gaps to move Kenya away from reliance on residential care facilities and towards stronger family-based care



Job Summary:**



The Project Officer – HES will monitor and report on all project activities related household economic capacity assessment and strengthening initiatives by providing training, coaching and mentorship, and technical support to LIPs, CCIs, caregivers, and careleavers in support of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) work serving the poor and vulnerable. Your thorough and service-oriented approach will ensure that CTWWC consistently applies promising practices in strengthening the economic security of families and constantly works towards improving the household economic status as part of the case management process for reunification and reintegration of children, prevention of separation of children from their families, and ability of young careleavers to live independently. You will support LIPs and CCIs to liaise with relevant government ministries and programs, other technical experts and agencies, and the private sector for transition and reintegration process. Also, you will coordinate closely with CTWWC staff and other existing HES initiatives such as IGAs, vocational training and job placement, private public partnerships to contribute to a holistic, integrated, and comprehensive economic empowerment approach. This will involve, effective private sector engagement by the LIPs, CCIs and other key stakeholders in close coordination with AFC advisor. You will actively foster engagements that will promote partnership with stakeholders to contribute to stronger greater economic opportunity, social capital and financial capital for the LIPs, CCIs, caregivers and careleavers.



Job Responsibilities:




  • Support the coordination, implementation, and monitoring of all economic empowerment activities with target groups as outlined CTWWC detailed implementation plan in line with CTWWC program quality principles and standards, donor requirements, and good practices.

  • Provide capacity strengthening to CTWWC staff, LIP, CCIs, youths and caregivers through trainings, workshops, facilitated group interactions, as well as accompaniment through regular communication, and site visits to support the successful implementation of the economic empowerment initiative.

  • Work closely with the positive parenting officer to ensure that economic strengthening is integrated with other family and youth strengthening activities.

  • Learn, understand and adapt globally recognized best practices in HES and family strengthening for the target population of reintegrated children, youth and families, as well as careleavers.

  • Conduct market assessments to inform family, youth and careleavers vocational skills training and job placements, linking closely with existing programs and services.

  • Work closely with social workers to ensure that referrals and linkages to programs and services related to HES are facilitated and fulfilled.

  • Provide models and capacity building to CCIs and other local partners interested in transition to HES types of services.

  • Conduct rapid assessment and mapping on economic empowerment institutions and create linkages, networking and referral mechanisms for CTTWC partners and beneficiaries.

  • Build and maintain productive relationship with relevant government departments like Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, trade and industrialization, NITA, and county government to create partnership opportunities for CTWWC economic empowerment for beneficiaries, including CCIs and LIPs transitioning to models of HES and youth empowerment.

  • Represent CTWWC in meetings at county and sub counties, economic empowerment working groups, and other events as requested, to support forging relations with the GOK, LIPs, other stakeholders, and the community.

  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of all assigned project activities as per CTWWC MEAL standards and established schedules.

  • Maintain records and databases of business prospects, contacts, and establish potential partnerships within various private sectors (private companies, foundations, financial institutions, public entities)

  • Develop and help execute key partner management plan for private sector



Typical Background, Experience & Requirements:



Education and Experience




  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness management, Social Sciences or a related field. Master’s degree will be added advantage

  • At least 4 years’ experience in economic strengthening support role working with either the government or NGO but preferably International NGO, and preferably with youth and/or families

  • Experience in building and maintaining productive relations, institutional linkages required with implementing and strategic partner agencies.

  • Knowledge working with communities on saving methodologies (VSLA, SILC, Table Banking, etc.), entrepreneurship and small business management, promoting livelihoods through agriculture and rural enterprise development, knowledge in micro-finance and financial inclusion principles and practices.

  • Past experience in leveraging private public partnerships is preferred

Operations & Finance Manager Job at Ongoza

The average growth of entrepreneurs in the portfolio is 116% in a year, adding up to 10 jobs.


You’ll be at the forefront of a talented and ambitious team of 17 to build the systems and structure around Ongoza’s exponential growth strategy as we look to reach thousands of scalable businesses and position Ongoza as the leading technical assistance provider for early-stage SME and technology ventures in Kenya.


Your Role


Your role is to refine, build, and execute on the systems around Ongoza’s operations as we enter our next phase of growth. You will be primarily responsible for leading Ongoza’s financial strategy and systems, streamlining Ongoza’s internal operational systems, aligning the team behind our strategic growth strategy, and executing on Ongoza’s talent and culture development. You will also lead and oversee the growth of Ongoza’s sister company that provides debt and equity investments in Ongoza’s portfolio companies.


As a central member of the leadership team, you will plan a role in shaping the growth of organizational strategy and growth over the next three years. This role reports directly to Ongoza’s CEO with one direct report; we expect the team to grow over time. You will have the following responsibilities:


Manage Operational Effectiveness (40%)



  • Working closely with the CEO and leadership team, align and monitor organizational goals and key performance indicators to ensure that the team is moving together and delivering effectively.

  • Serve as an internal organizational effectiveness consultant across Ongoza to create processes and build standard operating procedures that improve efficiency and effectiveness across Ongoza.

  • Lead in the selection and implementation of relevant software and technology solutions to modernize Ongoza’s internal processes, from finance to HR.

  • Lead management, maintenance, and full utilization of Ongoza’s office and co-working space.

  • Manage procurement and relationships with key suppliers and vendors. Manage relationship with immigration, and oversee work permit applications where appropriate.

  • Ensure that the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Lead the team through change management to drive adoption of operational changes.


Financial Strategy and Oversight (30%)



  • Lead creation of Ongoza’s annual budget in collaboration with the leadership team and Board Finance Committee.

  • Ensure that resources are properly managed and effectively invested for the greatest value to Ongoza’s entrepreneurs. Prepare and review financial information and adjust operational budgets as needed.

  • Forecast and manage Ongoza’s cash flow, playing a role in ensuring that Ongoza’s earned income contributes to an increasing portion of budget size.

  • With your support team, lead management of and oversight for all of Ongoza’s accounts and payments, including payroll and benefits, while ensuring we meet legal compliance.

  • Maintain relationships with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations.


Facilitate Team Growth (20%)



  • Refine, build, and drive tracking of all internal performance dashboards and accountability systems.

  • In collaboration with the departmental managers drive a comprehensive process to ensure cascading and alignment of organizational goals with team goals.

  • Lead the creation and implementation of professional development and learning systems for all staff.

  • Champion Ongoza’s culture (below): ensure that all organizational and operational initiatives align behind it and design initiatives to promote a sense of coherence.

  • Lead creation and implementation of talent strategy and recruitment initiatives designed to attract the highest caliber of talent while satisfying client needs.


Build Ongoza’s Investment Fund (10%)



  • Lead the development and growth of Key Partners, Ongoza’s sister company that offers debt financing opportunities for Ongoza’s partners.

  • Design products, deliver on partnerships with financial institutions

  • Oversee the development and management of a credit management system.

Qualifications

  • 6-8 years of overall experience, with a deep understanding of cross-cutting business functions and a track record of building successful processes and systems to ensure overall organization efficiency and effectiveness.

  • A good overview of financial management, having played a key role in ensuring overall organizational financial health and overseeing budgeting processes.

  • A practical understanding of how people and teams come together to deliver results essential. Experience with cross-culture management and leadership in a team larger than 10 people preferred.

  • Proven experience influencing teams positively and putting up necessary mechanisms to facilitate adoption of new behaviors and values during organization change management phases.

  • A natural ability to zoom out to see the big picture and at the same time be able to break down and prioritize milestones in a systematic way.

  • Background in general management, SME consulting, financial services, or related field with relevant degree.

  • Working knowledge of data analysis and performance/operation metrics.

  • A good understanding of accounting processes and legal compliance in Kenya.

  • Working knowledge of IT/business infrastructure and MS Office.

  • MBA or ability to empathize with the entrepreneurial journey preferred
