If you’ve ever spent months or years job hunting in Kenya, then you know how it feels to have your faith dwindle as days go by. When Kenyans graduate, they are in such high spirits of finding their ‘dream jobs’. As days turn to months, most people start to doubt if ‘the system’ really works.
“I have tried every job search trick known to man since I graduated in 2011 with an advanced Diploma in Business Information Technology. Since I do not have the luxury of giving up or the capital to start my own business, I have one trick to pull off,” confesses 25 yrs old Joseph Maina.
The 25 year old refers to a recent article trending on Huffington Post where a 22 year old graduate with a degree in marketing got a job by holding a sign in a train station with his qualifications written on it.
He resorted to this odd job search method after submitting hundred of marketing job applications with little luck, and what do you know! it finally paid off.
“Who says the same method won’t work for me?” poses Joseph Maina who is optimistic enough that this will bring an end to his job search misery.
“For a month I am going to give it a try by standing along Tom Mboya Street, Koinange Street, Moi Avenue, Muindi Mbingu Street, Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Street all in different days with a sign indicating my qualifications and skills.”
He adds that he will have a couple of printed CV’s just in case a potential employer wants to carry one for considerations. “I know it comes off as desperate but what do I have to lose anyway?”
He shares that he will make sure he is well dressed to show potential employers that he is a serious candidate. “As I said earlier, I have nothing to lose but everything to gain by doing this.”
What do you think about Joseph Maina’s bold step and would you encourage him to carry on with this odd job search method?
