The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out high quality, policy relevant research on population, health and education issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. The Center seeks to recruit a Web and Graphic Designer with modern web development skills but who really has a passion for online graphic design.

APHRC is looking for a creative tech savvy graphic designer with web development skills to lead our online communications work and strategy. 

The designer brings exciting new ideas on how to reenergize the Center’s online face using contemporary online communications tools and graphic designs including info-graphics and interactive data visualizations to increase our website traffic and create more engaged users. If you have a good sense of humor and love doing graphic design work, are active online on social media and enjoy using data to create dynamic visual effects then this is the job for you.
You will get to manage a new state of the art website(currently under construction).

Responsibilities 

Managing and building onto the APHRC website and other APHRC web based platforms Design and develop new website info-graphics and data visualizations including taking research data and turning it into designed finished web ready content. Assist with design of APHRC products for on and offline use, but with a focus on online ready products.Upgrade website by assisting with updating content and graphics; monitoring analytics; identifying new creative ways to showcase data online and increasing website traffic and engaged users; introducing new technology; maintaining links.Revitalizing the information architecture of various online platforms as needed and linking external resources to the Center’s website. Update and refresh new website (currently being designed by an external team) as needed by updating and installing new modules; ensuring cross-platform compatibility; establishing links.Develop new ways to visualize and showcase our data focusing on new innovations in online communication (such as info-graphics, interactive web tools, blogging, and social media) to improve content presentation, access, use and feedback. Code graphic design projects into e-newsletter and new web blast templates.Provide weekly website analytics by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends and then optimize and generate ideas to increase traffic through the site. Manage links that enable users to share documents with friends and colleagues. Manage and ensure an easy-to-use content management system for the website, be able to adjust CMS framework as needed by the team. Develop online web-friendly fundraising tools and work with the fundraising team to develop new ways to improve this functionality.Develop apps for smart phone and tablet technologies. Implement and maintain website enhancements, security/privacy policies, user accounts, access rights, passwords, etc. Recommend and apply user experience approaches based upon the latest interactive trends and best practices in the industry. Degree in graphic design, IT or a related discipline.At least 3 years relevant post-qualification experience. Programming language aptitude Proven excellent graphic design and copy-writing skills Demonstrated experience in creating info-graphics and or interactive web data visualizations.Multimedia skills such as podcast or webcast editing, video editing are An added advantage. Web and traditional Graphic Design, Web Savvy, Planning, Web User Interface Design, Web Programming Skills, Teamwork, Illustration Tools, Multimedia Content Development, Understanding Browser Capabilities, Internet Presence and Excellent Verbal CommunicationInterested candidates are invited to send applications via email no later than May 10, 2013, enclosing a detailed CV, quoting current and expected salary and providing contact details of three referees to jobs@aphrc.org or to the address below. Please indicate Web and Graphics Designer on the subject line of email or on the envelope. Include in your application a portfolio of not more than 3 web and graphic design examples you have personally worked on.

The Centre seeks to recruit a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer

About the Role:

To be responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of the Center’s strategic plan; support project planning, monitoring and evaluation; provide support to the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) monitoring and evaluation activities; and coordinate the implementation of the Center’s online Project Management System.

Duties/ responsibilities:

1) Monitoring the implementation of the Center’s Strategic Plan (2012-2016)

Coordinate the review of the existing M&E framework to align to the strategic plan.Conduct surveys to collect data on key indicators to measure success and impact of the Center’s programs.Coordinate finalization of annual and five-year implementation plans to align to the strategic plan.Participate in the annual review of the strategic plan to assess progress in its implementation.2) Implementation of the Projects Management System (PMS)
Coordinate the review/revision of an in-house and purpose built Project Management System (PMS) to ensure sufficiency in meeting the Centre’s needsReview the PMS manual to align to any changes made in the systemFacilitate training of staff in using the PMS as need arisesUndertake periodic monitoring of the system’s implementation and share quarterly reports from the system with senior managementDevelop protocols for supporting APHRC’s partners to implement a similar system3) Monitoring and Evaluation of CARTA activities

Support the M&E activities of the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA), a large doctoral level training programme coordinated by APHRC and involving nine African universities and four research centers in Africa.

The specific roles will include:

Coordinating conference calls with key program partnersWriting semi-annual progress reports to key partners and fundersCoordinating the drafting and submission of relevant documents for annual reviews to key partners and fundersParticipating in monitoring visits to assess progress in implementation of CARTA-funded activities in partner universitiesCollate semi-annual reports from CARTA committees and fellowsDocument outputs and outcomes of CARTA activities as outlined in the CARTA implementation framework
4) Project planning, monitoring and implementation
Provide guidance to programmatic teams in development of M&E tools within their programsParticipate in the design, writing and review of project proposalsParticipate in capacity assessment of new partners using the Centre’s assessment guidelinesCoordinate the organization of project inception meetings to set milestones, targets and action plans to guide project implementationParticipate in the assessment of the Center’s impact on policy influence through annual review of contributions of the Center’s workQualifications and Experience:

The African Population & Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to conducting high quality and policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.

APHRC seeks to recruit a Research Scientist to support a six-year (2009-2015) family planning program entitled “Measurement, Learning and Evaluation (MLE) of the Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (URHI)” being implemented in urban areas of Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal.

Led by the University of North Carolina, USA, the project is using state-of-the-art methods to evaluate the impact of the URHI on modern contraceptive use and examine other related questions.

Major responsibilities: In collaboration with and reporting to the Program Leader:

1. Lead the implementation of the project in terms of data collection, data analysis and report writing, synthesis of knowledge, and monitoring and evaluation of the impact of the Interventions across target countries, among others;

2. Define and oversee the work plans and ensure quality and timeliness of deliverables of the project’s Country Managers (in Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal);

3. Lead activities related to knowledge generation and sharing, documentation and dissemination of best practices across the target countries, in the region, and within the global community of practice;

4. Support the planning and implementation of country and regional dissemination workshops;

5. Support the collaboration with universities and training institutions across the region to identify capacity building needs, and the work to identify in-country partners to build country and regional capacity in monitoring and evaluation of population, reproductive health and nutrition interventions.

Qualifications and Experience

1. PhD in Demography, Public Health or a related discipline and at least five years of post-doctoral experience with focus on population, family planning and reproductive health in developing countries in general and sub-Saharan Africa in particular;

2. Proven experience in conducting large, national quantitative data collection at the household and facility levels;

3. Strong writing skills and good record of publications on population, family planning and reproductive health in developing countries;

4. Proven ability to work effectively with both funding agencies and with national and local personnel; Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills;

5. Experience in capacity building to undertake measurement and evaluation of population and reproductive health programs in developing countries;

6. Strong quantitative skills and extensive familiarity with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Statistical Packages (STATA or SPSS);

7. Some level of familiarity with impact evaluation (desirable);

8. Availability to travel internationally about 30-40% of time.

The Center seeks to recruit a Grants Manager.

The position will report to the Head of finance and Administration and will be based in Nairobi.

About the Role

The role of the Grants Manager is to manage the Center’s grants portfolio, mobilization of resources for activities and the contractual issues for sub-awardees.

The Grants Manager will assist the program team in identifying and sourcing for funding from multiple sources, will develop a Resource Mobilization Plan to meet the fundraising targets envisaged in the Center’s 5 year Strategic Plan.

He/She will also be responsible for the management and coordination of grants and provide technical support for general support proposals and administrative sections of research proposals.

Lastly, he/she will manage the sub-awardees’ processes including due diligence and contracting.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Identifying APHRC’s priorities for fundraising and maintaining an up to date database of potential funding opportunities and or collaborations; maintaining regular contact with the Center’s researchers and other program staff to develop project ideas and discuss fundraising strategies and approaches;Creating an annual fundraising strategy and budget for resource mobilization activities;Identifying in-country funding and partnership opportunities, facilitating ethical checks on partners and various collaborative documents;Grants portfolio management within the Center’s budget and using/working with existing systems and teams, ensuring timeliness, budget control and accountability;Managing regular communication and follow-ups with current and potential funders;Capacity building of staff on grant/donor policies, grants development and management;Assisting with development of funding proposals as per the various donor requirements;Coordinating fundraising and keeping track of all fundraising efforts including maintaining the Center’s online fundraising portal;Maintaining a database of all project grants, their duration and monitor timely submission of periodic and final reports to funders;Maintaining close collaboration with the research program teams on all aspects related to grants including management and compliance;Liaising with funders and keeping records of all grant agreements and correspondences;Working with the M & E Officer to ensure data from the Center’s automated Project Management System required for donor reporting is readily available;Supporting systems to manage and track sub awards including providing guidance on selection and development of contracts;Checking grant and partnership agreements highlighting inconsistencies for negotiation with funder and partners;Coordinating and or preparing timely narrative and financial reports to funders and partners as required;Working with the Center’s Policy, Engagement and Communications unit to keep funders appraised of APHRC research program initiatives and;Representing the Center in public forums and acting as an ambassador for the Center at all times.Masters degree in social sciences or other related fieldMinimum 5 years of relevant demonstrated progressive experience in international development with direct work experience in grants management and administration of grants; 3 years working with an International NGO in related fieldKnowledge of various donor requirements and demonstrated experience working with one or more of the following categories of funders; bilateral, multilateral, Corporations, US Foundations and various Government agencies.Technical:

The overall purpose of the position is to provide effective and enabling administrative and program support to the research team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Provide support in formatting of reports;
* Assist in various administrative duties including assembling and preparing necessary documentation, scheduling appointments;
* Assist in proposal development process taking responsibility for administrative sections of proposals developed in the various themes.
* Assist Research Officers in reviewing fee notes and organizing for contract preparations;
* Organize meetings (external and internal) for the theme;
* Take minutes in theme meetings and ensure effective follow up of action points; and
* Management of important paper and electronic documents for programs ensuring confidentiality
* Manage conference and workshop logistics by preparing draft budgets, making travel and hotel bookings, sending invitations, preparing workshop materials and arranging for per diems;
* Assist with program financial management, including assisting with monitoring of the program budget expenditure;

Essential

* First degree in business administration or the social sciences;
* 3 years of relevant experience in a busy office, preferably an NGO;
* Good planning, financial and organizational skills;
* Good computer skills;
* Excellent communication skills in English and French (both written and verbal); and
* Excellent interpersonal skills.

The Center is moving to its new office building which also includes about 25,000 square feet let out to other tenants.

The Center seeks to recruit a Facilities Manager for this new complex.

The Facilities manager will be responsible for the management of services and processes that support the core business of the Center and will work towards ensuring that the Center has the most suitable work environment.

He/she will generally focus on using best business practice to enhance efficiency by reducing operating costs while increasing productivity.

Duties include

* Negotiation of contracts for maintenance of property and supervision of various service providers including those for security, cleaning and equipment maintenance
* Monitoring and supervision of the various service providers to ensure quality services and value for money
* Routine inspection of property including fixtures and installed equipment to ensure the building structure and furnishings are in good state of repair and maintenance at all times
* Preparation of estimates for renovations and new works and solicitation of quotes from qualified service providers
* Management of security and fire safety ensuring that strict security and safety procedures are adhered to
* Liaising with our lawyers in the finalization of all legal contracts for the premises
* Rent and service charge collection. This shall include hiring out of training rooms on a day to day basis
* Liaison with the occupants of the premises to ensure they understand and agree to adhere to terms and conditions relating to the occupation of the buildings
* Supervise the provision of general administration services at the premises e.g. transport and catering services
* Preparation of annual recurrent and capital budget with regard to the premises
* Management of the service charge budget
* Ensure payments for ground rent, land rates, insurance premiums and all water and electricity bills are settled promptly
* Use performance management techniques to monitor and demonstrate achievement of agreed service levels

Skills and Qualifications

* BA Land Economics or its equivalent
* Some administrative qualification e.g. procurement
* Good knowledge of contract and property law
* At least 3 years administrative and property management experience
* Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office products
