Carbon Africa Limited is a young and growing carbon credit development and asset management company with offices and representation in Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and a team of 12 staff and consultants.

The company focuses on assisting clients to generate high quality carbon credits from projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Africa.

Carbon Africa also provides investment and financial advisory services to help develop viable clean energy projects.

Job description

Carbon Africa is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of Administrative Officer to be based at its Nairobi office.

The Administrative Officer is responsible for managing all company administrative, human resource, finance and communication functions.

Duties and responsibilities

Provide advice to senior management on administrative, human resource, finance and communication mattersLiaise with regulatory authorities, partners, clients and other organizations for the administration of company businessPrepare and update relevant company policies and proceduresBe responsible for company document and record management including filing, scanning, data input, updating and sharingEnsure all company licences, permits, insurance and other are in complianceManage procurement of company and office materialPrepare company correspondence and assist with email, phone and post communicationHelp to organize and participate in internal and external meetings, workshops and other events and record minutes from suchManage company accounts including records of income, budgets and expenditures and liaise with external company accountant regarding suchPrepare monthly financial overview of company accountsPerform timely filing of accounting, payroll and tax-related paperwork on a monthly or annual basis as requiredManage incoming and outgoing invoices and receipts and perform banking functionsEnsure petty cash is available at all timesAssist with recruitment and induction of new company personnelEnsure that employee leave, medical, business expenses records are maintained and reconciledManage the company website including regular updatesEnsure that relevant communication material is up-to-date and availableProvide weekly internal carbon market news briefingsAssist with project management or other tasks as may be requiredQualifications and requirements
University degree in business management, finance, accounting, administration or similarMinimum of two years of relevant work experienceGood understanding of business regulatory rules and procedures in Kenya.Knowledge of the same in other African countries an additional assetProficiency in English required. Kiswahili, French, Dutch, Spanish or Portuguese an assetExcellent writing skills and attention to detailCapacity to work independently and under pressureInternational experience or exposure an assetProficiency with relevant computer software an assetKnowledge of environmental issues, climate change, carbon credits or renewable energy an assetWillingness to travel domestically and internationallyApplication procedure:

This established company is dedicated to using market-based mechanisms to tackle the joint challenges of climate change and sustainable global development. As a key part of their carbon asset development team, your role will be extremely hands on. You will apply your technical skills to develop a wide variety of project types for the CDM and voluntary carbon market, mainly focused in sub Saharan Africa. In addition to identifying project opportunities and liaising with potential project partners you will be responsible for: 

Developing Project Design Documents for emission reduction projects

Ensuring the carbon asset development for projects is closely managed

Working with project partners to design and implement monitoring systems for projects to ensure successful verification with efficient and timely delivery of emission reductions

Preparing all documentation with close attention to detail

Contracting the projects you are responsible for

Maintaining knowledge on the CDM Executive Board, the Gold Standard and the Voluntary Carbon Standard 

The successful individual will have a proven track record in the carbon field and a technical qualification or Masters degree in a relevant topic. You will have a deep knowledge and understanding of the relevant processes of the CDM, voluntary market and applicable standards, especially Gold Standards. Comfortable with common forms of ERPA’s as well as DOE contracts, you will be highly numerate and have the ability to work to tight deadlines.

Graduate Student (PhD) Position

Topic: Understanding the variability of carbon stocks in avocado agroecosystems of Taita Hills in comparison to adjacent natural forests and other land-use system/agroecosystem

icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improved health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Project Title: Understanding the variability of carbon stocks in avocado agroecosystems of Taita Hills in comparison to adjacent natural forests and other land-use system/agroecosystem

Project objectives

Generate C stock inventory data for home gardens and commercial avocado plantation in comparison with other land-use systems across altitudes in Taita hillsImpact of age of plantation and seasons on C sequestration ratesDetermine if and to what extent avocado contribute to soil C storage in comparison with adjacent natural forest and other land-use system/agroecosystem.Evaluate the stability of the stored soil C in the selected avocado agroforestry systems and in comparison with other land-use systemsModel the changes in C stocks of avocado based agroecosystems in a climate change scenario in Taita HillsQualifications

This doctoral fellowship is expected to run from 2012 to 2014 and is tenable at icipe.

The successful candidate selected out of a competitive process will begin her/his training immediately.

Specific Qualifications

The applicant must have BSc and MSc degrees with a minimum award of upper 2nd class degree or equivalent in Soil Science, Agro ecology with background in Soil Science, Agricultural Chemistry, and Plant Physiologist.

Should be a Kenyan

Maximum age of 36 years for men and 40 for women at the time of application [Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply].
