Taita Taveta University College was established by the Kenya Government through The Taita Taveta University College Order, Legal Notice No. 156 of 18th October 2011 as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Formerly  the JKUAT Taita Taveta Campus, the University College aims at becoming a world class University of Science and Technology specializing in Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering, Earth and Material Sciences, Environment, Biodiversity and Agriculture, Science, Informatics and Business Studies.
The University College is located approximately 350 km South East of Nairobi and 150 km from Mombasa off the Nairobi Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Mwatate District of Taita Taveta County. The location offers a serene academic, research and student study environment on a Hill overlooking Voi Town.
The University College Council now seeks to appoint suitable candidates to the positions of;
(ii) Deputy Principal, Academic, Research and Outreach
(iii) Deputy Principal, Administration, Finance and Planning.
 The appointed Principal will be a dynamic, visionary and result oriented person of high ethical standards, integrity and professionalism. Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position. He or she will have an overall mandate of establishing a strong academic, research and administrative foundation for the University College.
 As the Chief Executive of the University College, the Principal will be the academic, research and administrative Head of the College working under the direction of the Council with the following duties and responsibilities;Have overall responsibility on the direction, organization and the administration of academic programs of the University College;Coordinate the development and implementation of the academic and administrative policies of the University College in accordance with the University College’s Master Plan and Strategic PlanMaintain efficiency and good order of the University College and ensure proper enforcement of the Statutes and other College Regulations;Provide innovative and creative leadership in the areas of finance, human resources, planning and infrastructural development, students’ affairs management and community linkages.Play a key role in the facilitation and maintenance of linkages with government/regulatory agencies and other local/international institutions of higher learningDemonstrated leadership experience in a University environment.Ability and leadership skills to effectively coordinate the academic and administrative functions in the University College.Perform other duties as may be allocated by the University College Council from time to time.Be holders of a PhD and be Professors or Associate Professors in the areas of science, technology and related fields,Be well published and academic leaders in their areas of specialization;Have at least ten (10) years of academic and research experience at senior level and possess demonstrated capacity for leadership in an academic and/or research institution having served as Dean/Director of faculty/school, or leadership in comparable levels;Be familiar with national, regional and global current trends in provision of higher education;Possess ability to plan, develop and implement academic programs and institutional linkages.Be registered with and be active members of professional associations in their areas of specialization;Have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, highest ethical standards, integrity and professionalism.Applicants whose professional backgrounds include teaching and administrative experience in reputable international institutions; networking, fund raising and resource mobilization as well as training in management fields will have an added advantage.
 Deputy Principal – Academic, Research and OutreachThe appointed Deputy Principal, Academic, Research and Outreach will be a visionary, dynamic and result -oriented academician with a strong research orientation. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of the Principal and will be responsible for all academic, research and outreach matters and programs including student welfare matters.
 As the head of the University College’s academic and research working under the direction of the Principal  and the Council with the following duties and responsibilities;In coordination with the Principal have responsibility on the direction, organization and the administration of academic and research programs of the University College;Assist the Principal in the development and implementation of the academic and research policies of the University College in accordance with the Master Plan and Strategic PlanPerform other duties as may be directed by the Principal and the University College Council from time to time.Be holders of a PhD and be a Professor or Associate Professor in areas of science, technology and related fields. Holders of PhD with Administrative experience at the level of Dean or director can also apply.Should have at least five years’ experience in a senior academic position.Must have held a senior administrative position in a University set upHe or she must have demonstrated capacity for progressive and innovative leadership in technological areas and have the ability to promote learning, teaching, research and development.Be well published and academic leaders in their areas of specialization;Possess ability to plan, develop and implement academic programsBe registered with and be active members of professional associations in their areas of specialization;Have good organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, highest ethical standards, integrity and professionalism.Be familiar with the education and development policies of Government of Kenya and be aware of the trends in higher education worldwide.Have good organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, highest ethical standards, integrity and professionalism.Deputy Principal – Administration, Finance and Planning
Reporting to the Principal of the College, the Deputy Principal, Administration, Finance and Planning will be responsible for administration, planning and development, finance and staff matters. The successful candidate must be Professor or Associate Professor with at least eight years academic experience having held senior administrative posts, e.g. Dean, Director, Chairman of Department or Principal in a University setting with a demonstrated capacity for progressive and innovative leadership.
 As the head of the University College’s administration working under the direction of the Principal and the Council with the following duties and responsibilities;In coordination with the principal have responsibility on the direction and organization and the administration of Administrative programs of the University College;Coordinate Administrative programmes which include but not limited to; Human Resource Management, Financial Management and Central servicesIn collaboration with the principal and the Deputy Principal-Academic, Research and Outreach, coordinate the development and implementation of the administrative policies of the University College in accordance with the University College’s Master Plan and Strategic PlanUnder the direction of the principal, maintain efficiency and good order of the University College and ensure proper enforcement of the Statutes and Regulations;Under the direction of the principal, provide innovative and creative leadership in the areas of finance, human resources, planning and infrastructural development, and community linkages.Perform other duties as may be directed by the Principal and the University College Council from time to time.Be holders of a PhD and be Associate Professors with at least five years academic and research experience. Holders of PhD with Administrative experience at the level of Dean or Director can also apply.Possess demonstrated capacity for leadership in an academic and/or research institution;Possess ability to plan, develop and implement institutional administration and development;Have proven capacity to promote learning, teaching, research and development in a university setting.Be familiar with education and development policies of Government of Kenya and be aware of trends in higher education worldwide.Have good organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, highest ethical standards, integrity and professionalism.Candidates who are holders of an MBA or its equivalent will have an added advantage.Successful candidates for the three positions will be offered a competitive remuneration package, including house allowance, medical benefits, gratuity and other benefits in accordance with the University College Terms and Conditions of Service for Principal and Deputy Principal.

Graduate Student (PhD) Position

Topic: Understanding the variability of carbon stocks in avocado agroecosystems of Taita Hills in comparison to adjacent natural forests and other land-use system/agroecosystem

icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improved health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Project Title: Understanding the variability of carbon stocks in avocado agroecosystems of Taita Hills in comparison to adjacent natural forests and other land-use system/agroecosystem

Project objectives

Generate C stock inventory data for home gardens and commercial avocado plantation in comparison with other land-use systems across altitudes in Taita hillsImpact of age of plantation and seasons on C sequestration ratesDetermine if and to what extent avocado contribute to soil C storage in comparison with adjacent natural forest and other land-use system/agroecosystem.Evaluate the stability of the stored soil C in the selected avocado agroforestry systems and in comparison with other land-use systemsModel the changes in C stocks of avocado based agroecosystems in a climate change scenario in Taita HillsQualifications

This doctoral fellowship is expected to run from 2012 to 2014 and is tenable at icipe.

The successful candidate selected out of a competitive process will begin her/his training immediately.

Specific Qualifications

The applicant must have BSc and MSc degrees with a minimum award of upper 2nd class degree or equivalent in Soil Science, Agro ecology with background in Soil Science, Agricultural Chemistry, and Plant Physiologist.

Should be a Kenyan

Maximum age of 36 years for men and 40 for women at the time of application [Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply].
