icipe, African Insect Science for Food and Health is an intergovernmental organisation funded by governmental aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics. icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Kenya and  Ethiopia.
icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Driver / Technical Assistant to assist the CHIESA project in field research activities in the Taita Hills, Kenya and in Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. A competitive compensation package will be offered to the right candidate.

Responsibilities

Assist the PhD and MSc students to install, maintain and service research equipment.Provide logistical support.Drive project vehicles.Carry out other daily chores, casual labour, and the activities described below.Provision of support to staff and students in their daily activities in the field research sites.Preparation of research sites together with CHIESA students and scientists.Installation, maintenance and service of the CHIESA project research equipment.Assistance in purchasing and collecting supplies and spare parts.Driving CHIESA project vehicles in the research areas.Carry out routine basic maintenance of the vehicles as deemed necessary to keep them in good working condition.Minimum Requirements/QualificationsPossess a mean grade ‘D’ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), or equivalent level of education.Must be computer literate, and be familiar with data entry using MS Word; and must also be fluent in communication via e-mail.Possess a valid and accident-free driving licence, with at least three years post-qualification driving experience.Must be aged below 40 years.Good knowledge of automobile mechanics.Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Kiswahili is essential.Familiarity with the geography (road network) of the coastal region of Kenya will be an added advantage.Reporting

The Driver/Technical Assistant shall submit to the Project Coordinator, a bi-annual progress report (by the end of January and July) based on the agreed work plan. 

The progress report contains a calendar of events per each assisted WP and a financial report indicating the costs of travel, accommodation, per diems and official receipts of all related expenses.

Duration of the Position

The position shall commence on 1 June 2012 and shall extend for a period of two years. 

It may be renewed for a further period of one year until the end of the CHIESA project, on 31st July 2015 following satisfactory performance.

icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Field Assistant to work in our IVDM section, Mbita Insectary, Human Health Division, at icipe Thomas Odhiambo Campus Mbita, South Nyanza.

Responsibilities

Assist in rearing and maintenance of mosquito colonies.Assist in sampling mosquitoes in the field.Minimum Requirements/Qualifications
Exposure/working experience on malaria or other vector-borne diseases research.Experience in insect rearing, preferably mosquitoes.Experience in field entomological studies (e.g., sampling and morphological identification of insects).Knowledge of handling Anopheles mosquitoes would be an advantage.Diploma in applied biology/medical lab technology etc.At least 1 year’s working experience.The successful candidate must be willing to work long hours including weekends when necessary.

The African Fruit Fly Programme (AFFP) (Plant Health Division) urgently requires the services of a competent Technical Assistant for a short term contract (one year with a possibility of an extension).

Reporting to the Director General, the successful candidate will have overall oversight for the efficient running of the Director General’s Office.

Responsibilities

The duties will include, among other things, the following:

Project objectives

Generate C stock inventory data for home gardens and commercial avocado plantation in comparison with other land-use systems across altitudes in Taita hillsImpact of age of plantation and seasons on C sequestration ratesDetermine if and to what extent avocado contribute to soil C storage in comparison with adjacent natural forest and other land-use system/agroecosystem.Evaluate the stability of the stored soil C in the selected avocado agroforestry systems and in comparison with other land-use systemsModel the changes in C stocks of avocado based agroecosystems in a climate change scenario in Taita HillsQualifications

This doctoral fellowship is expected to run from 2012 to 2014 and is tenable at icipe.

icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the job of Graphic Artist to be based at Duduville campus, Kasarani, Nairobi. This is a local (national) position that offers a two-year contract that is renewable.

The main objective of the position is to provide quality services in typesetting, design, layout and graphics for
all icipe publications and in particular provide expertise in the graphics and imagesetting area as DTP Designer/Imagesetter.

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration the Graphic Artist will perform the following duties, among others:

Typeset, design and format layouts of texts for manuscripts, newsletters, brochures and other icipe publications, using desktop publishing and graphic design software.
Prepare and suggest layout for icipe logos, publications covers and master copies.
Design icipe business cards, staff IDs, advertisements and special occasions cards as necessary.
Conceptualise and produce colour schemes for various icipe publications, posters, advertisements and information material.
Liaise with the Scientific Illustrator and Typesetter regarding control and design of originals for printing.
Keep a small inventory of desktop publishing and graphics design software, and report to SPO in new software needs acquisition.
Produce work and liaise with scientists and other professional staff on completion of tasks. Be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Arts/Design.

icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 300 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan.

icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Graphic Artist to be based at Duduville campus, Kasarani, Nairobi. This is a local (national) position that offers a two-year contract that is renewable.

The main objective of the position is to provide quality services in typesetting, design, layout and graphics for all icipe publications and in particular provide expertise in the graphics and imagesetting area as DTP Designer/Imagesetter.

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration the Graphic Artist will perform the following duties, among others:

Responsibilities

icipe requires the services of a young and dynamic Information and Communications Technology Manager to head its ICT Unit at the Centre. icipe’s infrastructure consists of a campus-wide LAN of CAT5e/CAT6, Fiber &Wireless Access Points, Cisco Routers, HP Switches, HP, DELL& Apple Servers and a Nortel telephone PABX.

They are operated by Microsoft windows servers &clients, Apple macintosh, Unix server, Microsoft Exchange 2007 e-mail system, Microsoft Office, a Helpdesk system, Financial & Administration systems and Intranet/ Extranet.

Requirements

The suitable candidate should have:

* A masters degree in computer Science or a related field
* Five years hands on management experience at a senior level in an ICT department/Unit
* Experience in managing a networking environment based on Microsoft server technologies (Windows server and Exchange Server)
* Should be knowledgeable in supporting heterogeneous network clients (Microsoft, Apple-Macintosh and UNIX/Linux)
* Should be knowledgeable in supporting Microsoft development technologies such as NET and SQL server 2000/2005.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations at icipe’s Duduville and ITOC Mbita campuses.

Specifically he/she will develop and monitor the implementation of an appropriate ICT strategy that will support the current and future ICT needs of the Centre.

This will entail among other things:

* Formulating and implementing policy guidelines for the development and maintenance of ICT systems in conformity with the Centre’s overall policy.
* Developing or acquiring, installing and maintaining systems for various types of applications used in the Centre.
* Providing leadership and management of the ICT team.
* Developing and maintaining standards and advise on the procurement of ICT equipment
* Developing and managing the ICT Unit’s budget
* Providing leadership in the development of information and communication technology related projects.
