Graduate Student (PhD) Position

Topic: Understanding the variability of carbon stocks in avocado agroecosystems of Taita Hills in comparison to adjacent natural forests and other land-use system/agroecosystem

icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improved health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Project Title: Understanding the variability of carbon stocks in avocado agroecosystems of Taita Hills in comparison to adjacent natural forests and other land-use system/agroecosystem

Project objectives

Generate C stock inventory data for home gardens and commercial avocado plantation in comparison with other land-use systems across altitudes in Taita hillsImpact of age of plantation and seasons on C sequestration ratesDetermine if and to what extent avocado contribute to soil C storage in comparison with adjacent natural forest and other land-use system/agroecosystem.Evaluate the stability of the stored soil C in the selected avocado agroforestry systems and in comparison with other land-use systemsModel the changes in C stocks of avocado based agroecosystems in a climate change scenario in Taita HillsQualifications

This doctoral fellowship is expected to run from 2012 to 2014 and is tenable at icipe.

The successful candidate selected out of a competitive process will begin her/his training immediately.

Specific Qualifications

The applicant must have BSc and MSc degrees with a minimum award of upper 2nd class degree or equivalent in Soil Science, Agro ecology with background in Soil Science, Agricultural Chemistry, and Plant Physiologist.

Should be a Kenyan

Maximum age of 36 years for men and 40 for women at the time of application [Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply].

Job Summary

Reporting to the Finance Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for.

Qualifications

* Aged between 30 and 35 years
* Graduate who holds Bachelor of Commerce degree (accounting option) with at least CPA part 2
* Minimum of 5 years experience in a busy accounting environment preferably in stocks management
* High degree of proficiency in computer applications for accounting. Those with working knowledge of TALLY system will have an added advantage.
* Must be able to work independently and meet strict deadlines.

Responsibilities
The stock controller will be in charge of proper recording and reconciliation of all stocks in Nairobi and co-ordinating information and records of stocks from branches.

Accountant
Desired candidate profile
Candidates should be comfortable in:
* Payment collection and regular follow up
* Knowledge of general accounting and taxation part
* Understanding of periodical account reconciliation with balance confirmation.
* Should have good communication / PR skills
* High degree of proficiency in computer applications for accounting. Those with working knowledge of TALLY system will have an added advantage.
* Knowledge of Store/warehouse activities

Responsible for:
* Credit Control
* Periodical credit review and setting limits in days and value
* Debtors outstanding and age analysis

Qualifications:

Senior Accountant- Stocks Ref: FIN-SAS-NOVEMBER 2010

Reporting to the Principal Accountant – Stocks; the job holder will ensure accuracy and completeness of inventory reporting and costing by ensuring that all stocks purchased by the business are properly recognized and valued for inclusion in the financial ledgers in accordance with the Vodafone Accounting policies and International Accounting standards.

The job holder’s key responsibilities will be to:
* Process all stock transactions through Oracle and eliminate month end entries at GL level except on accruals only;
* Ensure that stock transactions / movements (purchases and sales) are agreed to purchase ledger and sales ledger on a monthly basis;
* Prepare monthly cost of sale and balance sheet schedules in accordance to provisions of accounting standards (IFRS) and Policies (Vodafone/ Management);
* Reconcile physical stock balances, the stock ledger and the inventory control account in the general ledger on an ongoing basis;
* Review stock valuation module on an ongoing basis ensuring that all relevant cost elements are captured;
* Ensure a complete spares catalogue exists in the stock ledger for all engineering spares and receipts and issues of spares are processed;
* Ensure a stock movement report by quantity and cost is prepared on a monthly basis;
* Review and report monthly stock take reports by warehouse/care center managers and follow up on the variances;
* Carryout a complete stock take report on a quarterly basis and investigate and issue a report on variances noted;
* Obtain full management approval for stock adjustments resulting from stock take exercise;
* Facilitate detailed Training of the Safaricom stock handlers;

The ideal candidate should possess the following skills and competencies:
* Qualified Accountant CPA (K)/CIMA/ACCA/ACA or equivalent with honors degree from a recognized university. An IT qualification will be an added advantage;
* 4-5 years Accounting experience in a well run company of which 2 should be at a supervisory level;
* Hands on experience working with a computerized accounting system preferably with ERP application;
* Demonstrate proficiency in project management skills and competencies;
* Thorough understanding of the International Financial Reporting Standards and experience in application and enforcement of the standards at the workplace;
* Experience in co-ordination of project activities to completion;
* Ability to critically analyse processes and systems for enhancement of efficiencies and performance;
* Experience in preparation and supervision of basic accounting ledger entries and extraction of the Trial Balance and financial statements;
* Direct involvement in Corporate reporting for financial and management information;
* Ability to relate well with both internal and external customers and work in teams;
* Proactive, confident, self- drive for results with the ability to work under pressure and tight schedules/deadlines and with minimum supervision;
* Leadership skills and ability to train others and enhance their skills and competencies;
* A proven team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
