The KEMRI - Wellcome Trust Research Programme is an internationally renowned health research programme that is committed to research capacity development in the East African Region. Research internships provide an opportunity for recent graduates to gain experience in a dynamic research environment by working with senior scientific staff in on-going research activities. The internship gives young graduates an opportunity to decide if they would like to take up research as a career. Several internships commencing in January 2013 are available at our Nairobi and Kilifi sites.
Applications are invited from graduates of the subjects below who either completed their Bachelors degree within the last two years (2010 & 2011) or will have completed their course by December 2012.Biological Sciences (e.g. zoology, biochemistry),Health Sciences (e.g. medicine, pharmacy and nursing),Social Sciences, AnthropologyGeography, EconomicsMathematics, Statistics, ICTApplicants should have achieved or expect to achieve a first class or upper second degree.

Starting with a 10 week expedition in Kenya, East Africa to develop your skills in the classroom and community relations this 6, 9 or 12 month Internship provides applicants with practical experience and professional qualifications. You will learn how to live and work with a research team in a remote environment and attain experience essential for your work placement for the following 3, 6 or 9 months. During this phase you will undertake GVI’s Introduction to TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) , and Emergency First Response first aid courses. Additional 2 week training includes an online TEFL qualification, Swahili Language and Culture course with options to undertake Emergency First Response Instructor qualification and PADI scuba diving courses. You will support GVI staff and assist with the running of the expedition. At the end of the internship, successful interns may be offered paid or unpaid work with GVI or with one of our local partners.

Skills And Qualifications Received:

GVI Introduction to TEFL; Environmental Education; Health, safety and environment awareness; Interpersonal skills; Leadership skills; Community relations skills; BTEC qualification in Tropical Habitat Survey Techniques; GVI Boat handling and driving around marine mammals induction; For an extra cost PADI dive courses including Open Water and Advanced Open Water, PADI Rescue Diver and PADI Dive Master certifications; First Aid, CPR & Instructor training; Cetacean identification, biology and survey skills; Turtle identification, biology and survey skills; Primate identification, biology and survey skills; Biodiversity assessment skills.

Qualifications:

No special training or qualifications are required as all training will be provided in the field.

2. Objective of the mission
To support the Finance and Administration Department in its redevelopment structuring process.

3. Specific objectives of the mission
To enable setting up of a more effective information system management while facilitating revised
procedures introduction and application.
To offer support to the Accounts, Finance and Administration Department, in order to meet timely reports
and adequate budget preparation.

4. Methodology and Planned activities
Under the supervision and with the support of the Finance and Administration Coordinator, the selected
candidate will:
• Take in charge, under the supervision of Finance Programme Manager, the realization of
the 2011 Budget Follow up Forms for Project Managers
• Participate in meetings between Project Managers and Finance team, in order to fulfil
objective 1 correctly.
• Participate in follow up meetings for progress update and corrections on the said tool of
work as per expenses progress
• Take in charge partially some financial budgets for Donors under the supervision of the
Finance team (control of support documents from Partners, drafting of reports, etc…)
• Assist in filing and verification of completeness of the documentation on the donors
Files, preparation of checklists, verifications, etc
• Assist in filling and verification of completeness of the documentation on other files
related to Administration, accounting, etc.
• Support in preparation of the archives documentation for Administration and Finance
• Assist on development and updates for Donors accounting and financial codes
• Assist on other administration duties, inside the service as requested and in accordance
with the priorities and needs.

5. Expected results
With the support of the candidate, the Finance and Administration Department will be then able to:
• Ensure development of Donors Financial codes for Finance Department
• Contribute the realization of the Budget Follow Up form from Project Managers
• Contribute in the donors’ report with partner documentation control
• Ensure realization of a comprehensive archive system
• Contribute on the realization of a comprehensive information filling system for finance,

With the support of the candidate, the Finance and Administration Department will be then able to:
• Timely processing of Budget Follow Up form for Project Managers
• Respect of the Financial Donors Report deadlines
• Meet the 2011 budget deadlines
• Ensure realisation of a comprehensive finance information sheet for donors filling system
• Ensure realisation of a comprehensive information filling system for finance, Accounting
and Administration services

7. Requirements for the intern
• Must have a degree in Commerce/Business Administration/Finance from a
recognized institution. Prior working experience is desirable but not a must.
• Very good knowledge of Excel
• Good interpersonal and organizational skills
• Candidates should be able to work in a team as well as take responsibility for a
range of tasks under the supervision of the responsible person

Raising the profile of research for health among young Kenyans

The Third National Call for Application of Research Internships (2010-2011)

The Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR): This is a Kenyan non-governmental organization whose mission is to contribute to the strengthening of national research for health in Kenya.

This is done by providing support for multidisciplinary research to individuals and institutions, and engaging policy makers in formulation of health research policies that are evidence based. The Consortium also contributes to the building of networks and communities in research for health.

Raising the profile of science among young Kenyans: One of the ways, the Consortium aims to strengthen national health research is to facilitate the training and retention of young scientists, who are able to generate and use research findings within a multidisciplinary environment. This is done at different levels of career progression.

To this end, CNHR has initiated a national Internship Programme aimed at exposing young graduates to the option of choosing a life-long career in research. The second class of ten interns (2009-2010) successfully completed their training in July, 2010.

10 scholarships available for a six months research internship: Under its 2010-2011 Internship Programme, CNHR will offer 10 competitive scholarships for a maximum period of six months (March to August, 2011). The successful interns will benefit from close mentorship and supervision by senior researchers in various institutions across the country.

Some of the selected interns will have hands-on experience in multidisciplinary settings; others will work in laboratory/field conditions and be exposed to modern approaches of research using sophisticated diagnostic or analytical equipment, health systems research environment etc.

Applicants invited from medical, biomedical science and social science disciplines: For purposes of raising the profile of science among a wide cross section of young graduates, applicants are invited from both public and private universities. Young doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, biomedical, social sciences, graduates who have an interest in research for health are encouraged to apply

The successful intern applicants are expected to be enthusiastic and motivated young graduates who understand the place of research for health in the development of Kenya. They should be willing to dedicate their time working in the field and/or laboratory research conditions, and should be conversant with the use of computers and the Internet as source of research information.

Eligibility:
The successful interns must satisfy the following criteria:
* Be Kenyan citizens;
* Be a recent (past three years) first degree graduate in any of the medical/biomedical or social sciences disciplines from a recognized university
* Have a minimum of an upper second (or credit for non-classified first degrees).
* Have no previous health research internship experience for a period greater than 3 months.
* Be not currently employed.
* Medical and allied health professionals (medical doctors, dentists, pharmacy, nurses etc) should have completed their respective professional internship
