The Tana River Emergency Program (TEREF)
During the recent inter ethnic clashes conflicts in Tana River, more than 100 people were confirmed died, hundreds of households displaced, houses and livelihoods were destroyed. Looking for a volunteer management opportunity? The International Humanity Foundation needs your expertise and vigour to direct our orphanage!

The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) is seeking forward-thinking, dynamic graduates to contribute to our orphanage and education center in Kenya. IHF has grown over the past 25 years under the visionary leadership of Carol Sasaki (CEO) and the dedication of thousands of volunteers from around the world.

IHF is distinct from other NGO’s in this field as we practice the ‘Pass it on’ ethos in marginalized regions. We offer the privilege of education to those who without our organization could not reach it. IHF also has centers in Thailand and Indonesia and each center is a product of its environment and follows the cultural code and norms of its host country. IHF volunteers teach English, computer and math classes as well as maintaining relationships with local staff and the local population at every centre.
In addition to teaching, our organization’s volunteers engage in:

Public relations
Fundraising
Legal
Finance
Project experts (i.e., Peace farm and food relief initiatives)
Media

At the centers, directors divide their time between teaching and nurturing the children and working on international tasks. All directors manage one or more of our international task teams such as university relations, photography, fundraising and media. Special projects constantly arise and include moving food during famine feeds to monitoring children during breaks. Our center directors have a lot of say in what they do and must possess excellent time management skills.

Those who are secure without the comforts of home gain the most from this valuable opportunity. Although we are mainly seeking those with the above expertise, IHF is willing to consider those with transferrable skills if you can demonstrate them during our application process. Fluency in English, both written and spoken is essential. Those interested in volunteering at an IHF centre are required to complete a level of pre-trip duties in order to gain an understanding of how grassroots organizations function.

Stipend: Directors must commit to serve at least a year at the center. Basic accommodation and food is provided by IHF. Directors are volunteers at their centers, and all local tasks completed are done so without pay. Directors who commit to serving one year or more will receive a small monthly stipend. It is broken down as follow:-

First 3 months: Training period. $20 per month

3-6 months. Assistant director. $50 per month

6-9 month. Co-Director. $80 per month

9-12months. Co-Director. $100 per month

This stipend results only from the international online work; not from any local tasks.

After one year there is the opportunity to become a full Director. The stipend starts at $100-$150 per month depending on performance. There is the possibility of becoming Executive director if the CEO and other Executive directors approve, and a salary may be awarded depending on the financial situation of IHF at the time.

Strict IHF Policy: These stipends are fixed. They will not be raised for more experienced applicants, and everyone will be upgraded according to the timeframes outlined above, and no sooner. There are no exceptions to this, regardless of what may be the situation in the centre. We have found it impossible to be effective without IHF training and experience learning about the many tribes, cultures and laws affecting us daily as well as our own policies to best meet the many needs. We are an all-Volunteer organization and training and hands-on experience is paramount.

Please take the time to familiarize yourself further with our organization -www.ihfonline.org. And to our blog http://ihfblog.wordpress.com/home/.

Primate Release Programme – Diani, Kenya

Job Description: 4 x Volunteer Field Research Assistant

Background Information and Position Description

The Colobus Trust, Kenya, facilitates the rescue and rehabilitation of confiscated, orphaned and injured animals and where feasible their return to the wild. It is from this base I am conducting my PhD data collection and require 4 field assistants to assist in this process.

In September 2011, data collection will begin. One research assistant is required to collect comparative and baseline data on the wild Sykes and vervet troops in Diani. The study troops have already been selected and habituated and are waiting a dedicated volunteer to collect behavioural and feeding ecology data over an 18 month period.  A second research assistant is required to collect data on the primates scheduled for release, both pre-release while still captive and once released. Once released each troop of primates will be monitored daily for 12 months by a research team, collecting twice daily census information, behavioural focal follows, including feeding ecology and recording all wildlife interactions.

The release programme is based in Diani, Kenya and offers a unique opportunity to live in a beautiful beach and forested area, with many western comforts. Our accommodation has been kindly supplied by The Colobus Trust, and comprises unisex bedrooms in a communal house, hot/cold showers, 3 meals a day, laundry and housekeeping. There is good mobile phone and internet coverage, and using Sarfricom, the local network supplier, text messages to the UK are very cheap (approx 8p). This accommodation is also used for the Colobus Trust volunteer programme, and as such there may be up to 8 people sharing the facilities at any one time. Many of the volunteers on this programme are not serious researches and as such will be performing different duties and working different hours. Any researcher accepting this position needs to be aware of these differences.

Field time will be scheduled as 6 days a week, working 8-12 hours per day. Data collection periods will rotate between 6am-12noon and 12noon-6pm (4 days per week) allowing 1-2 hours a day for travel to and from the research site, phenology work, reliability tests and inputting the data, on a daily basis, on to the database. Full day follows, 6am-6pm will be conducted 2 days per week, Holidays will be formulated dependant on your terms of commitment, but will be loosely based around 4 week’s holiday per year. As this data is going to be used as baseline information for a PhD thesis, researchers are not permitted to take the data away, nor use it for any form of personal analysis.

This is a volunteer position and as such no wage or stipend is currently available. The volunteer is responsible for their return flight to Mombasa, visa, which will need extending after 3 months for an additional 3 months, comprehensive travel and medical insurance, food and accommodation as mentioned above (approx 70 Euros per week, eating a local food diet), all field clothing, including adequate walking boots. Please note that if funding applications are successful then the project will cover all food and accommodation cost – however, no funding is currently secured.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential requirements

Experience of working on a scientific research project, collecting and working systematically with data, ideally an observational/behavioural projectSignificant foreign travel or living/work experience, within a developing country and ideally the tropicsInterest in animal behaviour, conservation and welfare, and preferably a university level qualification in animal behaviour, primate conservation, zoology or other relevant subjectThere are 4 positions available, each looking for a six month long commitment. However, consideration will be given to candidates looking for a shorter commitment period, although a minimum of 3 months is required.

In addition, applicants must have certain QUALITIES: they must be energetic, patient, open, responsible, flexible, healthy, able to work independently but also as part of a team, be highly motivated and not easily distracted by the holiday mentality found here in Diani. Applicants must also be hardworking and able to keep going, and do so cheerfully! Our schedule is demanding and unconventional (6 days work, 1 day off), up to 12 hrs field time per day and no guarantee of getting lunch, but monkeys permitting we try our best. The position is not ideal for someone who needs a lot of personal time, or for someone who easily feels lonely. The ideal applicant must be comfortable being unplugged and a distance from easy communication with the outside world, although there is good mobile phone and e-mail communication, but sometimes things just don't work. They must also have above average resistance to social/psychological stress with a tolerance towards local customs and beliefs and be comfortable with other conditions and risks that are simply part of tropical fieldwork, such as limited healthcare, monotonous diet, rare confrontations with noxious plants or animals. This is very intense work - if your main goal is not gaining scientific research experience, you will probably not be happy in this position.

Undertake a Volunteer Internship with Children in Thailand, Indonesia or Kenya

Currently studying? Gain an understanding of how grassroots organisations function through an Internship with the International Humanity Foundation!

The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) is seeking forward-thinking, dynamic students to contribute to our orphanage and education centers in Kenya, Thailand or Indonesia.

IHF has no central headquarters, as each center is a product of its environment and follows the cultural code and norms of its host country. As a university student, your enthusiasm for education will be invaluable to our children and to our organization by encouraging them to constantly strive for a better future. IHF volunteers teach English, computer and math classes as well as maintaining relationships with local staff and the local population at every centre.

In addition to teaching, our organization’s volunteers engage in:
• Public relations
• Fundraising
• Legal
• Finance
• Project experts (i.e., Peace farm and food relief initiatives)
• Media

At the centers Interns divide their time between teaching and nurturing the children and working on international tasks. All volunteers participate on one or more of our international task teams such as university relations, media and fundraising. Before your arrival at the center, you must complete pre-trip tasks online to demonstrate your work ethic. Once at the center, IHF requires its interns to work eight hours a day on at-center and international tasks, six day a week. There is time to sightsee and tour the nation, but work is always the first priority.

Those who are secure without the comforts of home gain the most from this valuable opportunity. Although we are mainly seeking those with the above expertise, IHF is willing to consider those with transferrable skills if you can demonstrate them during our application process. Fluency in English, both written and spoken is essential.

Our internship program very much follows our mission of "educating the educated about the poor'. Through bringing university students to study at our centers for intensive learning experiences this allows students to go beyond the superficial in learning about the realities of poverty. This provides endless opportunities to learn intimately about the international issues of education, human rights, abuse and poverty as well as local issues such as tribal rights, land ownership, citizen status and tribal conflicts.

Pay: Upon acceptance you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of USD $75 which will be credited toward your weekly fee upon arrival. Once at the center, interns pay only USD $75 per week for the first four weeks, USD $55 per week for the fifth through twelfth weeks, and nothing from the thirteenth week on. These costs are to cover and room and board, both very simple.
